Default 06 Street Bob - Will not start

So I have to confess I haven't been the nicest owner to my bike, and left her sitting in the garage unattended for quite a few months. Now that I want to show her some attention, she is being a pain. She will turn over, but will not fire off and run. I pulled the plugs and primed the cylinders with some gasoline and also drained the tank and put fresh gas in. When I fired her up she ran, but only until the gas in the cylinder was burned off, then she sputtered and died.

When I turn the key on I no longer hear the whirring noise from the gas tank (fuel pump I guess?). Is this a good indicator that the pump is bad since it seems to not be picking up any fuel to continue running when priming the cylinders and I dont hear that whirring noise?

Looking for any help at all, cuz I want to get her back out on the road. Oh, and if it IS the pump, does anyone have a part number or anything, or where I could order this from online (Im sure HD dealer is gonna be costly).

Did you check the fuse for the fuel pump? If it's good, then do a voltage check on the battery. it's quite possible the last of the juice went to the start. If there isn't any response from the fuel pump I would suspect the pump.

Not for sure on the '06, but on my '08 it's in the electrical box, just behind the coil assembly, under the side plate - left side.

Default Fuel Pump

The fuel pump part number is 61016-04B. I would check the fuses and battery first also.

There was a new Dyna fuel pump in the classifieds a couple days ago. May be a deal if you need it.

The electrical caddy cover just slips straight off it is directly under the seat on left side the fuses are as follows from the left:

1. Top one with a 40 is main fuse (maxi-fuse)
2. left big one is starter relay
3. next one is system relay
NEXT row of small ones: (from the left)
1. top one: ecm fuse
2. middles one: fuel pump fuse (check this one)
3 lower one: engine control fuse
SECOND row of small ones from left:
1. top one: spare (swap this one with the fuel pump fuse)
2. Middle: spare
3. lower one: customer accesssory fuse
THIRD row of small ones from left
1. top one: open
2. middle: battery fuse
3. lower one: accessories fuse
LAST row of small ones from left
1. top one: instruments fuse
2. middle one: ignition fuse
3. lower one: lights fuse

Hope this helps. Check your battery cable connections as well. And it wouldn't hurt to put the battery on the tender and give it a full charge as well.

FWIW the fuel pump is inside the gas tank. If you plan to replace it yourself make sure you get a service manual first. You will need both the regular manual and the electrical diagnostic manual to test your pump. And R&R the fuel pump assembly.

The steps for replacing the pump are very specific and the manuals give you an exploded view of the assembly.

Well, I have a feeling I have caused myself more pain than I thought by not running her.

After pulling the tank apart and getting the fuel pump assembly and gas gauge float mechanism out, I saw that I had a lot of corrosion on the pump, float, underside of top plate, and even IN the tank (under the gas). My father, who was helping me with this, asked if I had ever used a gas can from the shed and I told him I did. He tells me it was a can of bad gas that he had go missing a while back and didnt know what had happened to it.

So I ordered a new pump assembly (all of it) for $280 shipped to the house, but now I am contemplating replacing the top plate and float assembly as well.

Concerning the tank, is there any way of removing this rust like corrosion (it's spotted on the sides of the tank and at the bottom of the tank) without having to cram my big hand into a small hole and MAYBE wipe most of it off? I know pictures will help and I will try to get some on Monday as I will be working all day today.

Thanks for that part number, would you be able to provide the part numbers for the top plate and fuel float (the entire assembly)? Thanks again for all of the help so far. EDIT: I also would need the part number for the top plate gasket.

Also, I was talking with some of the guys here at work and they mentioned there is some kind of fuel tank cleaner that would help clean the inside of the tank of the deposits. Would anyone know of, or be able to recommend, what sort of cleaner I would need?
