This worked great for 13-day, 4200-mi. roadtrip
Saddlebags, a backside sissybar T-bag, and two spiderweb bungees (metal hooks ONLY!) to hold tent-sleeping bag-pad, and whatever else you wanna pile up on the passenger seat to make a nice backrest
I have saddle bags on mine. It's just really handy to have somewhere to put stuff if you need to. You can always use them for spare helm, gloves, raingear, tools, etc. So it isn't like it an expense just for the trip. So far I've not found a need for anything that won't fit in the bags.
If you have a luggage rack and sissy bar plus a passenger seat you got bags of room(scuse the pun),,if you want to do it on the cheap go to the army surplus(in uk) and buy a kit bag(tuff and hard wearing),plenty enough room in those for all your clothes, put them in those big black bin liners first.Bungee that and your sleeping bags on your passenger seat, tent and those sleeping liners on the back luggage rack.Be amazed what you can pack up there behind you..if you want you can get one of those magnetic tank bags for your waterproofs/camera/passport/maps etc.All that might cost you a tenner my friend,I know..I did it on a sportster touring the length and breadth of Sweden... so you should have no problem..
07 WG with luggage rack, sissy bar and saddle bags. Took a 2600 mile ride with tent, sleeping bag, t-bag, and all the gear for the ride even took a little cooler. never can have to many bungee cords or web bungees. Total comfort using luggage for backrest. Got use to the weight pretty fast. I have a pic at the Wyoming border in my album
