Default Black RTV Gasket

Same boat here after a new 95" build, my new cover is flat so O-ring is no go, my plan is to run a bead of the black rtv gasket around the cover and put it on. Since very little if any pressure inside primary, this should work fine.

10K miles and original O-ring type gasket is still soft and flexible...no cracking, or leaking. I also changed out the stock OEM polished part for a powder coated black wrinkle cover. Looks more at home on the side of the bike. What as H-D thinking?

You didn't need one because the cover you used was a standard cover, not a decorative one. The standard ones that come on the bikes stock, whatever color they be, don't need the gasket. But if you buy one of the fancier ones with scripts, fins, logos, etc. they are slightly different on the inside you don't see when installed, and they do need a gasket.

Red_5 yours didn't need a gasket because it is still a stock cover, just powdercoated black. Had you bought the finned black cover, you'd need the gasket.

Hope that helped clear it up.

funny, i just told someone in another thread about my experience on this - ive had my derby off a handfull of times, and havent replaced the oring yet, and i dont leak at all - now, on the other hand - if you pull the primary cover off DONT forget to replace the lil donut gasket that sandwiches the midglide shift lever stanchions - that just gets really really slippery when goin down the road - trust me!
ill also +1 on the fact the dealers arent stocking the oring anymore - so youll get the flat paper gasket which i thought was a universal one?? - id pick one up just to have like mentioned before - its only a couple dollar item
plus youll get to talk to the cool parts guys thatll tell you to add 46 oz of oil when replacing your primary fluid on an 07 - yea...dont ask.

lol
good luck

Can you elaborate on the mid-shaft stanchions "lil' donut gasket" please?
I will be taking my primary cover off next week. I just picked up the $30 (rip off) primary gasket and o-rings for my 10k service. Thanks.

devil
itll be obvious when you take off the primary cover - where the mid control shaft comes through the primary, theres a lil donut shaped gasket that goes there that sandwiches between the inner and outer 'stanchions' (i dunno what thats really called) if you got the gasket replacemnet kit from dealer they should have given you a new one of these - if not you could RTV silicone it, but id go back and get a new one - I neglected to put that piece back when i closed up my primary and its really amazing just how much oil will fit through there and **** out either side of the midcontrol port - making the underside of your frame extremely wet and causing serious rear wheel slippage!
dont try this at home kids!
byt he way - i reused the primary gasket a couple times to and didnt leak - dont advocate, but just sayin

hit me up on PM if still not clear on anything

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You'll be pissed if ya gotta jack that thing up again and change the gasket AND clean all that earl off the primary.

I changed mine out and replaced it with the frisbee looking gasket. The o-ring which was stock was in good shape but didn't fit no groves in the CVO cover I have. The frisbee also had instructions on which side faces clutch. I have had no problems with it and its been off twice.
