Rode a 2000 Sporter for a couple of years and sold it. Recently I got a 08 FXDC now with 400miles on it and I don't remember hearing that loud of a noise when shifting especially from neutral to first. Think I should be worried? Also at 60mph what gear would you say you are in? Seems like to me it is right in the middle of 5th and 6th? Does all this bother anyone or am I just over reacting? Thanks
+1 with 60 in 5th gear and the big twin has sounds of their own. I also cut my teeth on a sportster and found the noises on a big twin quite intriguing. If you are still concerned at 1000 miles let the dealer do the 1000 mile checkup and see what they say.

Ya thats what my plan was... Just sweating bullets trying to get there with that noise. Think I will try that redline see if thats fixes it. Should I do that before or after my 1000 check up? Maybe it would be better not to the change the fluid 1/2 the way throu a break-in
I changed my engine oil and filter at least once before my 1000 mile service.... doesn't hurt a thing. Most of these big twins clunk when going into first, especially when cold. After mine warms up, it's pretty quiet. I run the Redline HD shockproof in the tranny.
With the appropriate lubricants in the transmission (75w140) and the primary (Type F ATF) you can make the 6-speed substantially quieter, but this tranny is never going to be quiet like a metric.
