i installed a 2.0 rush slip-on and a arlen ness big sucker with a power commander 3 downloaded with 814-010 map. i have heard that harleys run hot....and the p.c. 3 and map with said add-ons will help to reduce the heat the motor puts out....i.e. longer motor life. Well, after a lil warm up i took a short run up and down the street (real short....18 deg...) pull back in the garage and concerned how hot it was. normal? obviously the pipes were hot....mostly on the upper slip-on by the clamp. the engine just seemed to be puttin out alot of heat even being 18 deg out....how do i know when its running too hot? what is too hot? im from the sportbike world and all that tech gauges and such....so i could put the heat to a number....here on the fatbob i cant...i dont know how hot it is running. guys got some solutions or ideas or anything to say that can put my mind at ease alittle? appreciate it tremendously as i worry bout these things alot....
You could probably confer with Jamie at FuelMoto, as to the closest map for your setup. But a short run down the street and back, at 18degrees ambient is not going to tell you squat
It could feel really hot, just 'cause it's really cold out. An oil temp gauge would be pretty nice to have so you can judge the effects. Which means you need to get the bike up in operating temp range for awhile to get a good reading.
So, what viscosity oil are you using, at 18degrees ?
i do appreciate the replies, fellas....it helps. Archergodwin, im using ole 20w-50. But to be true, im actually not ridin till the weather is 55-60 ish. Just had to see if the goods worked. Ill give Jamie a ring and chat about the maps and so im clear...the analog guage will give you a pretty close temp on the bikes operating temp? and by chance do you guys know what the "safe range" is for that operating temp? Funny how i really didnt pay no mind to my sportbikes....beat the hell out of them....nowadays im cautious over every lil detail....thanks again, fellas!
