I had the same question before I did all the checking around today...

The indie quoted 3 hours of labor (at $105/hr) plus fluids = approx $360. Revtech oil.

One local HD Dealers quoted $340 for the regular; $380 for the synthetic. Harley fluids.

Another local HD quoted $475 for full synthetic HD fluids.

Of course, I'm in CA; who knows how much more this stuff costs out here?!

Hope this helps.

Update: I went with the indie. He came down to $300 including fluids. Most recommended no need for synthetic until I got some miles on the bike, so I went with the Revtech. Bike is running, shifting, and starting fine; I couldn't really tell the difference. Thanks for the feedback to all you guys.

Cool Opinions

I OK'd the synthetic oil "upgrade". Since I got it back, there's a starting problem-either it doesn't "catch" right away and I have to quit pushing on the starter then re-push and it starts right up, or it almost sounds like it is locking up, then grabs and starts. Seems worse after it's been sitting for an hour or so.

Before the change, I had no problems. The receipt says 5 qts of Syn3. Can it be used in the crankcase, primary, and transmission? Or should they have used formula + in the primary and trans? Anything else they could have done to upset the starting this way?

Damn! This is why I always do the services myself
Well, you know what they say about opinions! However, when it comes to oil, there are so many different opinions that there is an entire forum devoted to oil issues. If you really want to get confused, go there!

I prefer not to let anyone else touch my bike for a couple of reasons. First, I think I can do the work at least as well as they can. Second, if something goes wrong I can't blame anyone else but myself.

As to the oil issue, I've used Amsoil in my cycle engines and transmissions for decades and have had no issues. However, the H-D chaincase is another animal because the clutch resides in there. As I understand it from some pretty fart smellers on this forum, you should not use synthetic oil in the chaincase. Instead, stick with the Harley product. When I did the break-in service on my 2009 Street Bob, I switched the engine oil over to Amsoil 20W50, and the gearbox over to Amsoil synthetic gear lube. I replaced the chaincase oil with Harley stuff and everything works just fine.

I've been looking around for a 10k service , The dealers are charging $575 or so

I checked with a local indy (Cycle Dr ) in Costa Mesa and they quoted me
$290 + tax so around $310 or so out the door .

The local dealer has a sign that the 1K service for big twins is $300 + tax (probably means regular oil not syn.).

They increased their hourly service charge to $70 as of March 1.

Heck just do what I do, change the oil yourself and let the steeler do the rest, cost less that way.

I must be one lucky bastard, I got my 5k service done for $199 out the door and smiling! The guy I go to used to run the service department at the local dealer until they switched locations. 90% of the guys that ride around here take their bikes to him rather than the dealer... haha the stealer boys do not like it when you mention Ron's shop.
