Default newbie questions

hey guys,
i am new to harleys, just bought my first, a 98 dyna super glide. looking forward to learning all about these beasts.
i woud like to take care of all the maintainence items right away. any recomendations on fluid type, brands, oil weight for denver summers, or any other tips, tricks, or gotchyas i should look at.
some of the parts/trim have a few dings and scratches and i was hoping someone could point me to a source for good used or new factory style parts. the fuel gauge and the air cleaner cover are scratched up. i was hoping i could locate them used as i know poeple sometimes swap those itmes out in favor of performance or more chrome. anyway, i guess i am just looking for the groups favorite source for parts etc.

also looking for seat recomendations. i like a sleek looking seat but i plan to do some extended weekend trips. the seat on there now is a big pillowything. its comfortable, but not the look i want. is the stock seat okay? can some recommend a reasonably priced seat thats not too big, but still pretty comfortable?

thanks a lot, looking forward to your insight.

dan

dan,

Mostly I shop the net since I live in the sticks and there ain't much out here and the stores mostly have to order it anyway. The added plus is no sales tax; the added negatives are shipping charges and the wait. eBay is good place to find bargins and there are also speciality shops. I recently purchased two helmets from an online helmet store. not only did I save the sales tax but also saved a few bucks off the price. Many of these places offer free shipping if your total purchase is more than $xxx.xx US.

Just be very careful out there in ebay land or the Net in general; ripoff artists abound. I have had about 4 suspiciuos charges and upon checking two were from my wife and two were attemps at fraud.

Chicago Harley - 20% off all HD parts, accessories, clothes.... free shipping, no tax... small handling fee
10% off non-HD parts, etc.

J&P cycles are VERY EXPENSIVE! Many on this Forum board like J&P, but they are outrageously high compared to the above mentioned HD parts dealers.

I bought mine from http://www.splathat.com/ they are in Utah. Check out the site as well as others. Shipping can be a hassle depending on where you live. I really like their service.

Discount parts are available from any number of places on the I-net. If you want genuine MoCo parts, try Zanotti Harley in PA, they can be found at zanottimotor.com. Found them to be very accomodating and offering a 20%-25% discount on most stock HD parts. Shipping is reasonable and most of my orders have been in my hands in less than a week. Their site also has a price checker feature that you type a part # into and it will show you their price out the door.

As far as a seat goes, if you're looking for something not so stock, you might want to call Bar Enterprises in CA. I had a custom solo seat made this winter for under $300.00 and it not only looks good, but is not too butt numbing, but it's not broken in yet. harleyseats.com

Good luck and happy shopping.

Hale's Harley Davidson in Mansfield, OH has the 20% off, too. They are a bit more reliable than Chicago HD from what I've been told. J&P is definitely expensive, but they have two good points - they are seldom back-ordered on anything, and they have good tech support. Jireh is another place and they have great prices. http://www.jirehcycles.com/
