I just got my red hot sunglo FXDF last week after trading in my XL883C. I didn't get to ride it much until this weekend, but I did get a good 160 miles in these past two days.
After doing some good highway riding along the 101 I realized that I may need to convert my controls to mids (it came stocked with forwards). After an hour I pretty much have my arms stretched out and my shoulders sore, and I'm battling with my feet to stay on the pegs while riding 80+ mph. BTW, I have a 29" inseam.
Don't get me wrong; this is still on helluva ride. However, I felt much more comfortable when I took the demo ride of the Fat Bob with the mid controls. If the dealer won't change my controls to mids for free (or cheap), I might just get some heel rests or Kuryakyn Switchblades.
That's gonna be pretty involved. Inner and outer primary plus all the linkage and peg mounts. I bet they aren't going to be cheap at the dealer. Maybe you should try a reach seat or something similar to move you closer. Another option is to add mid pegs so you have another place to put your feet.
IMO, mids are the way to go! Way more control than forwards...I run highway pegs cause it's nice to have another position on long trips, sometimes I even throw my feet back on my passenger pegs. Also if ya ever gotta hit the eject button, gonna be alot faster with mids!
Find someone with a black motor and mids. Offer to swap parts. Alot of people want forwards. If you offered to pay for the swap, I'm sure someone would do it. I really don't think the labor would be too hard anyway...just do it yourself.
Finding most of the parts should be easy. The tough part will probably be the shift shaft and the primary covers. It sounds like a lot of do it yourselfers either cut the shaft or leave it in place and don't change out the primary items.
get heel rest i had the same problem when i first got my bob and the heel rest worked at keeping my feet on the pegs. I am only 5 7 and its was a reach for me.
Beautiful bike. I love the color! I have a 32" inseam and went with mid controls. The forwards doubled me up like a clam. They felt like a barcalounger, with the feet forward. The mids feel more aggresive especially when cornering. Try to demo a bike ( demo rides should be coming up soon )
