I picked up a tombstone tailight on ebay for $15 and thought I'd play around with it. It's definitely not a direct bolt on, but that's not a problem. I spraypainted it black and mocked it up just to get a feel for it.
Here's the problem...It covers up the fender holes for the license plate, so a relocation is in order.....but I have throw-over saddlebags.
I guess the only option is a ghetto-looking mount of the plate on the bag.
Here's some pics of the mock-up. Please tell me any thoughts/concerns/ideas that you might have. All comments welcome....even the smartass ones .
the constabularies around here don't really bother motorcycle riders too much.
they let just about everything go, as long as you're not ripping it up and bothering other taxpayers..
not sure where you live - but here ... mounting a tag like that on a removable unit, without a tag illuminator would get you pulled over for sure.
Oh ... since you asked - it does look ghetto ............ like the lamp though .....
ok. Thanks guys. I do really like the look of the tombstone myself. Of course I'd give it a better paint job and more symmetrical final mounting position if I go this route.
glide05....your post was a little over my head...But as far as lighting, I'd use the turn signal (wired up as a running lamp). By drilling/filing a small hole in the bottom of the lens cap, I'll have that area illuminated without any extra lighting. Also, the plate mounted in the pic is just taped to the bag for mock up purposes.
I never considered it illegal to have the plate mounted to a removable object (like a saddlebag)......However, even the stock plate holder is removable, so what really defines "removable"?
I had one on my 06 and had to fab a special mount to hold it on and still use a plate mount then ended up having to make my own laydown plate mount in order to get a plate mount to work but i got it done here is a pic with the stock plat holder.
I still have the way i mounted it somewhere the light got trashed when i got rear ended but what i did was drill a 1/4 20 i think hole in the back bracket and run a long bolt through to the tab where the old tailight bolted and put a lock nut on it with lock tight that way it was low enough to use the holes for the licensee plate bracket ill look and see if i still have that part and take a pic and post it so you can see where i drilled the hole. But i may not still have it since the only parts that survived was the outer houseing and the inner mount.
