I have a 09 lowrider and was wanting to change my exhaust to Samson Street Sweepers and the HD shop techs said in order to do it I will need a chip and a new air filter sytem. I was wondering if anyone knew if I needed this done in order to change exhaust or if I'm getting a line of ****?
well - you technically don't NEED to do the air cleaner and ECM flash but its a good idea. If you think of your engine as a big air pump.....improving the air flow out of the engine doesnt make much sense unless you let more air in too (thats where the better air cleaner comes in). If you dont the bike will be louder but not really run better...adding the A/C as well will really wake up the motor; noticible difference. As far as the ECM flash goes thats really up to you....HD's newer EFI systems can adjust to minor engine mods like and AC and exhaust upgrade so lots of people are running their bikes without flashing the ECM apparently without problems.....HD recommends the stage 1 flash.....supposed to prevent lean running conditions (leaner than usual at least) but I for one am sceptical that it actually does anything besides raising the redline.....
OK another thing I forgot is are there removable baffles in the 09' exhaust systems and if so are they alright to remove was told nothing you can do but leave the way it is?

I dont think they are "removeable" per se but you can drill em or punch out the centre's I think.......why dont you just buy a set of RUSH or Cyccle Shack slip-ons? cost you about $200 and should give you the sound you're after...performance will be at least as good(probably better) than the Sampsons......
My opinion: If you're gonna increase the exhaust, it needs to be opened to breathe. Breath through your nose, and then exhale through your mouth while it's wide open to see what I mean. As far as a chip goes, some after market pipes almost require that you re-chip the brain. The best way to determine that is if the bike is DynoTuned. From my experience, a Vance and Hines big Shots on my Dyna Lowrider required that I open the air filter element, but no chip was necessary. i hope this helps.
