Did you do a search? There was a thread on here addressing what you are up against. I know one guy built a bracket to go from the shifter mount to one of the mounting brackets. Another guy used a kit for a bagger that put a heel/toe shifter on it.
Like you mentioned in your original post, I'd cut, weld and refinish first if it were me.
But then again I have a welder, love spray paint and like to tinker.
Ackman...I did follow that thread closely...a bracket is an option, just not sure of it with vibration, etc and lining it up just perfectly - may be more work than riding...thought the shifter extension may be the way to go...
Donr - I have a welder too....what type of medal do you think that is, as mine is a stick welder - do you think that I would have any troubles with going too long that it would not be a nice shift...too high or too low down due to the extension?

The only way to know is to strip it to see, hopefully it's not cast. If it is weldable you may have to sleeve it because it's so thin. I'd be willing to mess with it though for two reasons 1. it's not very usable the way it is 2. worst case scenario I have to buy a lengthened shifter which is what I would have to do even if I didn't mess with it.
