It's not really the size of the apes that is helping your back, it is the hand position change. Stock Harley bars, even the mini apes, rotate your hands down slightly and put a small angle in the wrist. This leads to the "knot" in your back during long distance rides.

Just about all aftermarket bars feature a much flatter hand position with a more neutral wrist position. That's what cures the back problems.
