Default Deutsch connector question

Hey all,

I'm in the middle of changing from stock apes to 16" Wild 1s on my '04 Wide Glide. The stock wiring is long enough to run through the new bars and I can do the extensions below.
I got the Deutsch connectors and have crimped some on the wiring extensions. They fit fairly snug to the stock connectors but don't "lock" in.

My question(s):
Should they "lock"? How can I make sure the extensions stay connected? Of course I will shrink wrap the connections but not sure that'll be enough to keep it together when I pull the harness back through the frame. How can I make sure they are good n tight? Drop of solder maybe?

Thanks in advance for the assist.

Joe

**BTW, thanks mudpuddle for the cheap crimper idea!!! My crimps aren't as nice as yours but they definitely work.

Sorry, I can't visualize what you are trying to do.
Post a pic of what you are doing? Are you just sticking the wire leads into the connector?

I crimped male leads on the wire extension to plug into the stock female leads. The other end will have females to plug back into the connector.

Did this instead of splicing into the middle.

Sorry, I am not quite sure either... Are you using the connector bodies or just the metal crimp on pieces? Which connector body? i.e. how many pins?
Maybe a pic would be best.

If you are using the Novello kit, the extensions do not lock at the place where they are heat-shrinked. They do lock into the connector plug just like the stock ones. Just make sure that the heat shrink is tight, and holding them together. There should be no tension on those wires anyway, so you should be good.

I would have just added 6"s of wire instead of the extections just soldier and shrink wrap your connections and your good to go

We use a lot of deutsch at the plant where I work and I wire these puppies daily. Pins or sockets typically just slide into the backside of the connector and on the inside of the conn. are little lock tabs that hold the pin/sockets in place. once you are done loading the connector there is a little piece that locks these puppies in place. The socket connectors have an orange cap that snaps on the connector. Does this help?

+1 same thing where I work as well, I was even able to get ahold of an official deutsch connector tool. I can take those connectors apart and back together in a matter of seconds now.

TheDonThere, we started building 100 pin plugs using 18 ga. wire, that plug sucks big time trying to pull a pin out using their pin removal tool. It's a good system, stainless pins/sockets and good sealing properties.

What did you end up doing with the male and female connectors? Just use shrink wrap or did you solder it? Im stuck at the same point in my handlebar change. Thanks!
