Noticed a couple days ago that my fork lock wouldn't work anymore....after moving the handlebars a bit while fiddling with the key, the lock engaged, but it's like it locked the forks out of the locked position.....essentially I can turn the handlebars all the way from 10:00 all the way to the right, but can't bring the bars all the way to the left, where they should be locked? Make sense?
Basically, a guy could steal my bike and as long as he had no left turns to make, he'd be golden.
Suggestions?
The same thing happened to mine last summer. I didn't know I had a problem with it until I pulled into my driveway and tried to turn it around so I could back it into the garage. I couldn't crank the handlebars around all of the way to the right. I messed with it until I got it to work and didn't lock it. It was still under warranty so I took it to the dealer. They just took it apart and lubed it up and it's worked fine so far.
Can you see the hole the lock is supposed to engage when you turn the wheel to the right? Is there anything in it that might prevent it from accepting the lock pin? If nothing is in it, maybe get someone to help you so you can watch the hole and have them try to engage the lock and see if you can tell where the issue may lie.
last time i used mine i coulnt get it unlocked, and i was a long way from home. after 30 min. of wrestling with it and bending the key i finally got it . ill never use it again.
AMEN. I have insurance to pay for a stolen bike. They don't pay for a ride home if the forks don't unlock.
Mine did that when it was only a few weeks old. I sprayed some Dri-lube in it and it has been fine since then. Now it works like butter.
That was the first thing I did when I got my bike. Lube-it 8 teflon lube. Did the cables, ignition, lock, throttle linkage etc. I have never had a bike where they put enough lubricant on at the factory. SOP for any new vehicle, bike, boat, lawnmower etc.
Just for grins, I tried using the fork lock before closing down in the garage tonight...go figure it worked this time, smooth as butter...first time in like 2 weeks.
If it wasn't finicky with a mind of its own, it wouldn't be a Harley.
I had an issue last year where it wouldnt lock them at all. When looking up where the pin comes down, the hole is elongated, front to back. The pin on my lock had moved to the back and was missing the holes in the tree to lock the forks. I stuck a screwdriver up there and it moved forward. I havent had an issue since. Maybe thats not exactly your issue, something to check for tho. I also just spray WD-40 right into the lock where the key goes, makes it work real smooth.
Rauzer is absolutly correct. ALWAYS do this check first. Simple tweek with a screwdriver
(not in the key slot ) use the slot on the under side of your frame.
It happened to me where the fork would not unlock and after 30min. of screwing with it, I got it unlocked and straight to the dealer and they said "The fork lock has been an issue" and replaced it. You said its under warrenty so let them fix it.
