Default Fork Lock

Noticed a couple days ago that my fork lock wouldn't work anymore....after moving the handlebars a bit while fiddling with the key, the lock engaged, but it's like it locked the forks out of the locked position.....essentially I can turn the handlebars all the way from 10:00 all the way to the right, but can't bring the bars all the way to the left, where they should be locked? Make sense?

Basically, a guy could steal my bike and as long as he had no left turns to make, he'd be golden.

Suggestions?

Park it with a wall on the right side of the bike.

sounds like theres something out of place,it looks new so let the dealer play with it. Wait was it always like that? Cause ya do have to fiddle with it while turning the key , but should lock to the left and not come past10 o clock. nly thing I can think is maybe your starting too far to the right side of left to begin, but that seems too simple...I dunno man!

Seriously, I think taking the lock/neck apart may be your best bet to figuring it out.

It sounds as if you have managed to operate the lock when the locking pin, operated by the key, is not engaged with the hole it should fit in. Or in other words you need to turn the forks further to get to the point when the pin will fit into that hole.

If that doesn't work, then you need the workshop manual and a tool kit!

Yeah, I noticed the issue when I was trying to lock it the other day...I always have the handlebars cranked all the way to the left, and this time the key wouldn't quite engage. I fiddled with it a bit until I realized it was locking the bars outside of the proper position. The bike's under warranty so I figure the fork lock should be as well...just gotta decide when I feel like having them look at it......might take a look at it myself, first.

I don't have a service manual with me at the moment...is there anything about the fork lock in there?

That was quick - you must have read what I was writing over my shoulder!

It is covered in Section 2.31 in my 2003 book. There is a lead seal on the underside of the lock housing, with a set screw behind it. Removing both lets you take the lock out. However if your bike is under warranty and you are unable to make the lock work, visit your dealer first.

It might be user error, or needs attention!

My bike started doing exactly the same thing about 2 weeks ago. Haven't had the inclination to either take apart he lock or hit the dealer up about it.......but 1k service coming up and i'll take care of it then. Been wrestling with the idea of doing the 1 k service myself. Whats the quickest way to find out if my bike is under warranty? Its an '07 that i bought used from the dealer and i was so excited about getting a good deal on the bike that i didn't even ask about the original purchase date.

Default Fork Lock

If you start your bike with the ignition switch in the neck it is a bit more trouble to take the "lock" out because of all the attached wiring. That reason #148 to move the ignition switch somewhere else.
