I just ordered a new chrome primary cover and derby cover how hard is this gonna be to swap? its for a 99 fxd, i have a service manual and got the gist of how to do it but i was wonder can i use the fluid that i drain again or do i need to buy some more. thanks!
Tap all the fasteners in the middle lightly with a punch before you take them out. This loosens them up. More than one person has stripped these fasteners out. I learned that in a post from JRK. You don't have to change the fluids on the primary chain case (derby cover). Just make sure the bike is standing straight up (use a piece of 2X4) and nothing will leak out.

He's changing the primary and derby. Yeah get a new gasket and save yourself a headache later.
so would it be a safe bet to replace the primary chain cover gasket and new oil?
best thing to do. Just follow the manual on torque sequence. Also be sure to get a o-ring for the drain plug for the primary. And there are two small tower gaskets. The parts dept will have em and know what you are talking about.

If you are lucky. I had to walk the parts guy over to a dyna and show him where the tower gasket goes...After I gave him a part number and showed him in the parts book.
Then again, I don't know where the cappucino cup holder goes on a bagger either though.
Primary gasket, derby cover gasket, access gasket.
If you have torx, it wouldn't be a bad idea to find some chromed allen bolts to replace them with.
Drain your oil first, while the engine is hot.
Remove your access cover, and derby cover.
Then remove the primary cover ( the tap trick is a smart Idea)
remove the old gaskets and clean the surface with rubbing alcohol.
put the new primary on, might as well adjust your clutchpack wile your in there . fill with oil back up to the lip of the clutch (hard to see for me) think it was about a quart in mine. put your access cover and derby cover back on with the new gaskets.
Done!
