Default 1000 mile checklist

I know I've seen it in another thread.....but I can't seem to find the checklist the stealer's service dept. uses to tighten everything at the first 1000 mile service.....
You see.....I called at 500 miles like
the stealer said to and my appointment isn't till the end of MAY!!!

By then I'll be damn near 5,000 miles!!!!

Anywayz, if someone has the list of what bolts to tighten or check
or a thread referral

Please respond to this post

Thanx,

-J

I just scheduled my 1,000 mile service for Monday at 9am. I'll be sure to tell them to check motormounts and that 5th gears whines. And I have this rattle around the rear brake caliper or under the rear fender while rolling. Anybody know anything the dealer should really look at?

I typically go over every single bolt I can reach after a few rides...but I'll be honest..none have ever seemed to move. Nonetheless, I'm a bit paranoid so I continue to do so. If someone could respond to this thread with a list of bolts that dealers typically check (possibly troublesome or bolts that typically come loose), I'd also appreciate it.
Thanks.

Had mine done yesterday at 908 miles. Cost was $274 w/parts & labor at H-D of North Texas. The checklist is quite long, but I don't actually see the words 'tighten' or 'bolts' on it. In fact, the only mention of the term 'loose' is under the heading of Wheel Spokes (bent, broken, missing or loose).

Hopefully Shovelhead Bob will chime in here...

The only thing the service manual says (at least what I can find) are:

-"Critical fasteners, check tightness".

To be done att 1 000, 10 000 and 20 000 miles.

Oh yes and, "Should be performed by an authorized harley-Davidson dealer, unless ypu have proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified".

Maybe the dealer has a list over critical fateners, otherwise check every possible fastener.
Preferably with a torque wrench. Look in the service manual for torques and check it with 90% of given torque.

Do your own stuff if you're not a complete moron. I changed my oil and filter a 500 and again at 1000. Breaking it in on petroleum and then going sytnthetic at 1500. The only thing I found at 1000 miles was a few loose spokes. Do you want to pay those A... holes to tell you that?

I actually found a table over critical fasteners in the service manual when reading more properly.

For Dyna 2006 models:

-"Critical fasteners, check tightness".

To be done att 1 000, 10 000 and 20 000 miles.
Should be performed by an authorized harley-Davidson dealer, unless ypu have proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified".

This biggest rip off in the auto or moto business is the famous _ _ point inspection. You all have gone to get an oil change and they have two sep. oil changes you can get. One with a 15,20,30 point inspection or one with just an oil change. I have gotten the upgraded oil change with the point inspection and have purposely loosened a blinker light, or a dome light or something they are actually supposed to check. More than half of time they never check it. When I confront them they always say sorry we must have over looked it. Now a simple check like this isnt a big deal if they miss it, but it lends to the idea that what else did they just overlook. Its a crock of BS, they charge you 5 bucks more for the service that 50% of the time they dont even do. On a small scale its not a lot of money but multiply that by hundreds or thousands of cars and its a lot of money..

I get the same feeling about this 1000 miles service. I am gonna go out on a limb here and say that most of our bikes are getting fully checked like they say they are gonna and we are paying for this service. Do you think if they have 75 bikes in the shop that they are gonna take there time checking bolts on every bike. I really dont think so. I think the service is way over priced and HD gets you by saying the warranty will be voiced if you dont bring the bike to them so you can GIVE your hard earned money to them. I say the hell with it and do it yourself. I n the long run you will save money by learing to do general maintanance on your bike. Hell the way it seems is that most of our bikes are modified and we would have to go thru hell to get a warranty claim anyways.

This isnt just a harley thing its all mechanic shops in general. Its all BS. Sorry I am venting a bit.

Had a car that was brought in for routine maintanance and what do you ya know. Mr you need this that and this fixed immediately. Well the 1st thing I say to them no matter what is I am gonna get a 2nd opinion from a different mechanic. Boy do they hate that.

As consumers we just need to be more aware. Not everyone is as honest as people here.

Sorry for the long post. Had to vent

I totally 100% agree with you.......especially with cars and the more expensive the car the more inspections...total BS!
