Personally I take my parts from 400 grit to 600 then straight to polish. I use heavy metal but, the other big names are fine as well. if it is not a flat shape I use a Mother's Powerball but, if it is flat I use the good old blue show towels. Take your time to get your tool marks out and rub away.

Like stated above, check out the Caswell link, start with 400 grit wet sand paper working your way up to 1000 or so. Work each grit in one direction till all previous grit's sanding lines are gone either under running water or like I did underwater in a bucket with some dish soap used as lubrication. Sand with the next grit at 90 deg to the previous and so on. I finished on a buffing wheel with a couple different pastes.
