Fuel Guage not working on FXDWG

Fuel Guage not working on FXDWG

Does anyone know how these things work? My guage starting not working intermitantly for a month or so, now when I turn on the ignition it jumps to way over full reading regardless of how much fuel is in the tank. I checked my connections, the cap's light is working (appears to have power) is there a sending unit that could be replaced??

Is your bike under warranty? You didn't say. If it is, take it to the dealer. In any case, I don't rely on the gauge - I rely on the trip odometer as do most people.

what year is your bike? I have a gauge I just took off my fxd i dont know if its the same but you can have it just pay shipping if it helps you at all.

Yes there is a sending unit inside the tank off to the right hand side. Has a float with a variable resistor as it travels. To test it hook a ohm meter to the two wires and travel the float from bottom to top or vice versa should climb or drop in resistance numericly with no opens/shorts or high low resistance mixing going on. Any of that going on replace the unit.

Thanks for the info everyone. My bike is a 1996 FXDWG, I'll check out the sending unit as that seems the most likely culprit. Speedracer, I hooked up a known working gauge and the problem remains, that's why I'm leaning toward a sending unit at this point. Thanks for the offer though.
