Fuel Gauge Problem
I've have a 2001 Deuce (EFI) with 5,600 miles.
Fuel gauge constantly shows tank is full (regardless of tank fuel level).
When ignition switch is in off position gauge gradually drops to empty (appears to function properly).
When ignition switch is turned to "on" position yellow "low fuel" light illuminates until gauge rises past shaded section of gauge scale (appears to function properly) and gauge rises to "full" section of scale (as if tank were full--regardless of actually tank level). Normal sound of fuel pump and pressurizing is evident.
Otherwise, bike runs normally.
Does this sound like faulty fuel gauge; or a faulty fuel gauge sending unit/faulty float?
If not clearly one or the other, are there any tests I can run myself to further diagnose?
Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer.

I know that on the 2004's there was a tech bulletin about the float hanging up inside the tank. It happened to me. I think it was a ridge on the float that had to be ground down some. It was fixed no charge by the dealer. Not sure what years it affected, but you might check with a dealer on that.
I'm finding it's the minority of owner's that DON'T have a problem with their fuel gauges.
For anyone that hasn't "tested" the theory -- my Deuce ran out of fuel at 194 miles on the trip odometer. Started feeling loss of power on accel at about 188 miles. Normally, I fill up at appx. 100 miles; but in this case I thought I may have forgotten to reset the trip on my last fill up.
Fortunately I was only 1 mile from home. Only problem was Cr*p I took from my buddies.
The guy that brought me the jug of gas made sure to call everyone I ride with on the way to the fuel drop.

Yeah, I ran out of gas the first time my gauge got hung up. Out in the boonies, coasted into a guys driveway. He had a can of gas for his lawn mower but didn't want to sell any. Had to convince him by offering $10 for a gallon, and that was at prices about 5 years ago. Nice huh?

This happened on my Ultra and I think the fuel gauge issue is common. I since just watch my milage.
