As I posted before, I recently bought a '97 Dyna Convertible. I don't know how long it has been since the fluids were changed do I thought I would do this.
I was interested in using synthetic oil so I stopped at a local Harley shop and asked about which oil to use. Of course they recommended using HD synthetic. I don't have a problem with this. What I question is that they recommended using the same oil in the engine, transmission and primary. I hope they were right because I just finished changing all the fluids.
I know I should have asked this sooner. I guess I am too impatient.
Agreed on the number of threads on this topic, but what the hell. Yes, HD says your CAN use the same syn3 oil in all 3 holes, but I believe it's too thin and light for the tranny. I prefer a lube instead of oil in there. My local Advance Auto sells mobil 1 products, so that's what I use.
20-50 v-twin in crank
10-40 dino in primary
75-90 gear lube in tranny
Another thing to think of... Change the fork oil. I changed mine when I had 5k miles on the bike and the stuff was nasty. I just changed the fork sliders to chrome and step 1 was to drain the forks. After 7,500 miles since the last change - the oil looked great. I used Bel-Ray 15w Fork Oil, but the HD SE fork oil is ok - just more costly...
The HD synthetic is crap. (my opinion) I also use Mobil1-vtwin 20/50 in the engine, Redline heavy duty shockproof in the tranny 75/90, and regular dino in the primary, same weight as the engine.
Also flush the brake lines as well... bunch o crap in there when I changed my bars at 3k miles.
I bought the Redline big twin kit for around $80. It came with enough trans and primary for one change, and enough oil for two changes. Plus a cool funnel and a geek hat.
"This kit is suggested for with all Evos (’84-up) and includes 5 quarts of 20W50 Motorcycle Oil, 1 quart of V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof, 1 quart of Primary Chain Case Oil, 1 bottle of Fuel Injection Cleaner for Motorcycles, a sticker kit, a Red Line Oil embroidered hat, and a versatile funnel.
$79.95"
