They see rear shocks and a swingarm and think "Sportster."

I knew a guy that had a wide glide and he actually thought it was a softail! And the best part was, he did his own oil changes and never knew the primary was separate from the motor! In the 2 yrs he owned it, he never changed the primary fluid thinking the motor oil lubed everything! But as I look back, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed!

It's pretty scary how little knowledge people have of their bikes. I mean, owning a Harley isn't like owning a Toyota Camry... they're a bit more hands-on.

I say "No, a Street Bob".

His reply..."Oh...yeah...the Street Bob's pretty nice".

His is for show, mine is for go.

Just reaffirms my observations that everyone else thinks a Wide Glide is the only Dyna and my Street Bob is really a Night Train.
My 16yr old daughter knows more about the different HD models then he does.... She says that my Wide Glide is hers... But when I tell her no way in hell is she getting it then she says she wants a Black Cherry Night Train..

This thread makes me long for the days of my youth, when if you walked into a Harley dealer you had three choices: Electra Glide, Super Glide, or Sportster.

Makes no difference to me if somebody confuses my bike for a Sportster, a Wide Glide or a Fat Boy. The bike is what it is regardless of what other people think. Heck, one of the reasons I chose my FXDC was that it does look a bit like a Sportster to me - very similar rear fender, exposed shocks, narrow-glide front end - while being a bit more comfortable for me and my wife (when she rides with me) than I found my Sportster to be. To me, the Sportster is one of the best looking motorcycles ever, so I don't perceive any insult at all when somebody confuses my Dyna with a Sportster!

That's what gets me...when I bought my Harley, I researched every single family, and narrowed it to a Nightster, Street Bob, or Night Train...I knew the distinguishing characteristics of every single bike, and half the time can tell people more about their bikes than they can. I just can't relate to someone who buys something this expensive without researching it first.

I don't mind if someone mistakes it for something else. When I get irritated is when it's accompanied by sneer or snide comment, as is usually the case...at least in my experience.

Only one Fat Boy in my house and that is me.
When I was a newb I wanted a Fatboy too. Must be something about the name. Any way...I grew up.
Fatboys are nice but I''l keep my hands high and my *** low. I love my Street Bob.

I was riding down the highway and guy rolled down his window and yells out is that a LowRider. I nodded and he gave me the thumbs up. I enjoy when others know what bike your riding it gives you the feeling you have gone in the right directions with mods etc. As for a Fat Boy its a nice bike but just not my cup of tea.

Ha...almost forgot about this...to follow up yesterday's bit, I was in my office today and some of our soldiers were arguing in the other room about different HD models. Someone made a comment about the bike outside (mine) and someone was like "oh yeah, that's a Dyna".

Another guy goes "so is that one of the big ones?"

And the guy who knew it was a Dyna goes "yeah, but it's kind of on the low end of the big ones".

I thought about going out there and giving a lesson on the Big Twins and where the Dyna actuallly fits, but I played nice and just stayed at my desk.
