Couldn't resist could ya...LOL! 3 outa 6 people on this thread have bought the 440's and felt the need for more (better), I'm one of em & noticed a ginormous difference with my YSS shocks & agree to spend a little more $ for the yss, or get the works for about the same as the 440's & have a much better shock! Just speaking from hands on experience!
Actually, i can't resist the need to help someone from needlessly spending on money on crap(progressive the whole line) and steering them to something better, and yes sometimes you just have to hammer it in for it to take effect, and I can't resist, lol, just trying to help.
agree - 440s running on my bike and they are very disappointing - wish i'd gone with something else...gunna have to live with them now but they are very ordinary.
Guess I'm in the minority, but I switched from stock to the Progressive 440's years ago and have been real happy with them.
Now, I admit that I've never compared them to the YSS, Ohlins and Works. Pretty expensive to buy them all and do a side by side, (and still subjective) comparrison.
Madden23, have you actually tried all thes different shocks on your bike?
If so and if money was no object, which manufacturer and model would you suggest?
stay away from progressives.... suck in comparison. I have Ohlins which simple rule the roost. I was quoted just over 400 bucks for works black trackers(single rate spring, 12.1") a month ago. Talk to Tom at works.
easy way to describe the difference, It's like going from the ride of a pickup truck or economy car to that of a top of the line lexus. Bumps that you felt before just disappear and the bike handles better to boot.
well... I used to ride an old hard tail. anything, even stock shocks are better than that.
That said, I have some 412 HD's and I'm very pleased. Money is definately an object for me though. Not that I don't have any... I just don't like to spend it.
I have to concur. I went with the 440 in 12" and not happy with them. I think the shock itself has potential, but in my case the 12" has very little travel left (1.85" total travel) at the lowest preload setting and bottoms out easily. If I crank the preload up to prevent bottoming, then they are too stiff. I'd bet those that like the 440's either went with the longer unit (12.5" has .5" more travel), or are a bit heavier than I (180) and the higher pre-loads are more matched to their weight. I think if Progressive would have designed in more shock travel we'd have an acceptable shock. Well, looking at the Works now so if someone wants a slightly used pair of 440's, make me an offer. You'll probably want to be in the 200-220+ lb range so that the needed pre-load isn't too stiff. And these are not the Heavy Duty models - I can't imagine what those ride like on a Dyna.
I've had the 440's on for 500 miles and they are far better than the stock ones. I'm sure that the Works, YSS and Ohlin units are excellent, but I wasn't ready to spend that kind of coin. I got mine at Motorcycle Accessories Warehouse for under $400. I called up and was able to negotiate it down a bit.

only 20 bucks more for the black trackers from works. And they would have been built for your weight and riding style. Like Saint said; "1000% better" and for only about 20 bucks more.
I have had 440's on mine for a year and a half. I like them. I don't really understand the reply's that they are "just crap". No one has offered any real information as to why they are "just crap".
Others complain about the travel. It makes sense to me that a shorter shock will have less travel and it has to do it's work in a smaller window.
I would like to understand the difference with real info.

Wish I would have know that at the time. I was told by a buddy that those would cost twice as much, and I didn't bother to check with the company. Live and learn.
