Theres been a lot of talk about failing primary bearings. Mud posted pics a long time ago of the bearing itself. I thought I'd add a different slant.
The bearing and race here is from a 2008, so the problem isnt specific to the 06 Dynas (although more prevalent with them).
The race was set at .065, not the .100 the moco calls for (yes, it was a factory install). Whether it was originally set that deep, or it walked doesnt make any difference. It just made it a pain to remove. I had to cut a couple of grooves in the race, then split it with a chisel to get the SOB off. (a .090 tool wont fit in a .065 space, no matter how hard you try)
I guess what I'm trying to say is if the bearing starts making noise change the race, even if it looks good. Nobody likes doing the same job over again.
Doesn't your model used the alignment dowels? Is the alignment issue no longer a valid explanation?
I have read them needing replaced in 06's,07's,08s and 09's. The problem is most likely still the alignment issue using the style bearing they use. A taper bearing would most likely been a better idea.
I ride an 06 dyna and the only issue I have had that was Harleys fault was the broken wire to my rear fuel injector. Engine movement was more then wire freedom. Which showed just recently at 24k miles. Other then that my early produced 06 dyna has been very reliable, purchased 9-05.
Sometime will tear into the primary to weld the bolts to my stator rotor and check out that bearing.

You'll hear it...sounds like a bad throw-out bearing in a stick-shift car, or like spinning a steel rollerskate wheel (if you're old enough to remember that sound!) Search for my thread "Finally, Good News...", has all the info you'll prob'ly ever need.
