ok i posted a thread a few days ago about a noise i was hearing coming from the engine i did a search and found a little some guys said to put some lucas oil additive in .i guess it sounds like a sewing machine ive checked everything that i thought could be loose and cant find anything. i paln on changing over to synthetic this weekend will this help the noisy engine?
When I changed over to HD syn3 at the 1K, it sounded like I had marbles in the case. Changed that out quick... run Mobil1-vtwin 20/50 now. Motor sounds fine.
actually it will be a little noisier with synth oil, its a motor, gonna make some mechanical noise, normal..
It's a motor you are basically sitting on. It's amazing how much noise they make, you'd hear a lot more in your cage if it weren't for the sheet metal.
yea the syn. makes it louder.
sewing machine aint bad.
its the ticking that gets me.
billet rocker boxes, new gear drive cams and lifters and belt drive and now mine sounds like a sewing machine.
you may want to try something else.........................
Dino oil like HD360 will abate noise better than synthetic. But the noise from syn oils is not an indication of wear. If you are looking for a good dino oil try Brad Penn 20w50 high performance at www.bradpennracing.com
I ran HD dino in my 06 FXDI the first 12,000 miles. All the sounds of the bike sounded normal to me until the windshield was on (which I rarely use). The bike sounded completely different and I did hear the sewing machine.
I now have several thousand miles running the HD Syn and hadn't noticed any difference in the way the bike sounded. I also had not used the windshield in over a year. Last weekend, I used the windshield for a couple hundred mile trip. I was amazed how much quieter the motor was. No more sewing machine affect echoing off the shield.
I don't have a clue what the inside of the motor looks like, or how much wear has occurred on the internal parts. But the motor sounds as though it is purring instead of clanking and rattling.
