Default what does everyone here use ?

I was wondering what everyone here uses and where did you guys get a bike lift and or tools for your bike. What are the approx. prices and so forth. I have the 1000 mile service coming up but the dealer wants around 300 bucks. I am thinking for that I can do the service my self and buy all the tools I need for it. What tools would I need to do a typical 1st service?

Once again thanks for all the help. You guys are great.

I have a simple Dunwell frame jack. Doesn't take up much room, and very handy for other things around the garage, too. Sears now sells one that seems to be pretty good for a low price (relativly speaking).

You don't need a lot of special tools to do basic maint. You'll need a set of allen and torx sockets or wrenches. And a small filter wrench. These things you can find at Home Depot, Sears, etc. No magic, just simple mechanics.

That pretty much says it all. How do you like the Dunwell Jack?

A week ago I went to Sears to purchase their Craftsman Professional bike/ATV lift (the yellow one). I lucked out and found one assembled on the floor for $118. Sales guy said the box was ripped so they had to mark it down. That was a score, if you ask me. Waiting on my lift adapters to come off backorder before I use it though.

I've heard their red one won't fit. Not sure on that though.

I did the 1000 mile sevice on Sat. it wasn't hard, just follow the service manual. It took about six beers all together. I bought the Craftsman red and black motorcycle lift ($80), I don't recommend it. It's a little to tall to fit under the bike. I knocked off my kick stand spring while trying to set it up. Just for future refrence, you don't want to knock off your kickstand spring. Anyway the jack will work but it needs some cutting and bending. Your better off finding a jack that works. Once your have your jack socket, allen, and torx wrenches is all you'll need. Oh yeah, you'll need some rags. It's pretty hard to remove the oil filter with out making a mess.

So Whiff, your saying that you need to buy adapters to use that jack??? Do you get these at Sears also or where do you get them? How much?
I was just at Sears an hour ago and was looking at the jack your talking about $149.

I also have the red jack by Craftsman, you need to place it carefully and use the strap across the tranny but don't catch the coil when you are putting it around the bike. Make sure that you leave enough slack in the strap when you raise the lift so that you don't crush anything when it goes up.

I built my own jack using plans I bought on the internet. It works well, but I probably could have bought one on sale at Sears almost as cheaply. Live and learn.

Speaking of learning...
Oh yeah, you'll need some rags. It's pretty hard to remove the oil filter with out making a mess.
I also learned here somewhere to cut a 2 liter soda bottle to catch the oil from under your filter when you take it off. Works great!

Yep. Due to the configuration of the underside of the bike, it won't sit properly without the possibility of doing some damage to the oil pan and possibly some tubing near the front. Go check the right underside of your bike and you'll see a block of frame that portrudes below the rest of the frame to protect the oil pan. This keeps you from getting a level fit on the lift. You can use anything sturdy to stick under the left side to even it out, however, HD makes some perfect fitting rubber padding for $17 [98965-99] so I went ahead and ordered them. They're made to clear all parts that would be endangered. It was just easier that way.

$149 is a good price.
