I live on an island of about 500,000 ppl. on the extreme east coast of Canada...the island is the size of Texas....I live an hour and a half from a major city (100,000 ppl.) I go away for 4 or 5 days at a time and leave my doors unlocked...I sleep at night and leave the keys in the ignition of my vehicles...the last big crime is that some one stole the crab apples off aunt Maud's tree. I park at the edge of mall parking lots and walk the extra 30 seconds to the mall...I know this sounds like "Mayberry" but that's my story....I love my bike....ya gotta love small towns...
This sunday I parked on the yellow stripped line in my local country garden store (it was packed) there was a cop directing traffic and he didn't say a word to me, he was probably pleased I didn't take up an actual parking spot. but i felt bad when a car pulled up to the handy capped spot next to my bike and the lady had to watch her wheelchair when pulling it out of the car, but thats the way the cookie crumbles. I offered to help her out.
I park in a parking spot like any other vehicle. I'm not opposed to parking in the diag lines... not sure I'd do the sidewalk though. Some punk spit on my tank last summer as I was parked up on the sidewalk in front of a tavern. I'd rather my bike be away from people, not where they're walking or hanging out.
It must depend on where you live. In Wausau, WI the town just ain't big enough for me to worry about this kind of stuff. But if I lived back in Baltimore where I'm from originally; in that congestion I imagine I'd be worried.
Insurance (which I'm sure you have) should give you piece of mind. It's just metal and paint. I could care less if I was with out my bike for a few weeks while it is getting repaired. I'd just spend more time on the lake jerkin' bucket mouths with a chug bug.
why not just take your cage if your gonna go shopping at a store with a large parking area.....this way you can avoid the soccer moms in the minivans...
if im riding my bike i dont go to places like that...
If it is somewhere that has a bike rack, park by that. In some cities here parking structures have motorcycle parking spots which is quite nice. Otherwise in the striped spots or on the sidewalk right by the door. Never have been hassled about any of my parking choices. But, too much worry will drive you insane that is for sure.
i think by the 'diagonal striped' areas, you guys are talking about the fire lanes. there is a reason those are there. if you're okay with the chance of a fire truck pulling up next to it and getting hose or other equipment drug over and around your bike, then go for it. as a firefighter, and a rider, i wouldn't make an effort to move stuff around someone's bike (or car) that was parked in a fire lane. just don't come yelling at me when your tins are scratched to hell from the hose couplings or any other tools.

Was that you that ran the hose through my wife's BMW?
