Default Primary Leak Help

On my '06 LR just noticed at 17k I've developed a significant leak around the shifter shaft that exits the primary housing. The dealer did the 10k service and I'm wondering if they replaced the seal or not. Anyway, it seems like a pretty simple process to remove the primary cover but being the first try wanted to make sure I'm not getting myself in for more than I expected. Second question is the service manual says to release the drive belt tension before removing the cover. I'm lost where that is necessary. The manual also does not mention having to remove the footpeg mounting bracket. I do not see how the primary case will come out over the shifter shaft and clear the mounting bracket. But not having done it I'm probably missing something hence my question to the experts on the board. Thanks.

you do have to remove the peg mount other than that its an easy job. I do not know why you would need to release the drive belt tension. I have had my cover off before and never messed with the drive belt. just remember to put the bolts back in the same hole you removed them from.

I'm new to Harleys but had my inner and outer primary off last week to put forward controls on. I did notice there is a gasket not seal that mates the inner and outer cases in the tunnel that houses the mid control shaft, perhaps that gasket didnt get replaced or slipped out of place. If the oil is coming out around the shifter shaft, this is your problemo, imho

Right on the money dude! Little round gasket inbetween (sticky on one side for easy install)! Just like you said! Very easy job
