Default FXD Speedometer Relocation

I finally got my speedometer off of the handlebar top clamp. I too searched for what would give me the best placement for what I want, and what would still look decent. I took someone elses approach and mounted it with "cable clamps" to the risers.

Parts:
2, 1" cable clamps from Debrix Cycles
1, Chrome Speedometer Bracket Kit PN: 67293-95 (found 1 for $65.00 on ebay)
1, Chrome handlebar top clamp PN:56567-86b
3M double sided mounting tape
Loctite
Various chrome bolts and acorn nuts from Ace Hardware

Since my risers are 7/8" diameter and I could not find clamps smaller than 1", I used the 3M mounting tape to both: hold the clamps in place during the install, and fill the gap giving me a secure fit while dampening a little vibration at the same time.

Clean all surfaces of the risers, clamps, speedometer housing etc with a clean terry cloth. No polish or anything. You will fingerprint the hell out of it all, so leave the final polishing until you are done.

Remove your handlebar top clamp/speedometer housing and replace with the new top clamp. Then disassemble your speedometer from the stock housing.

TRIAL INSTALLATION FIRST
-Only finger tight, no loctite, no wrenches etc...-

Mount the tape inside the cable clamps that are going to clamp onto the risers(LEAVE THE PROTECTIVE PLASTIC ON THE OTHER SURFACE THAT CONTACTS THE RISERS).
Mount the clamps loosely to the risers.
Mount the speedometer bracket to the clamps.
Position the clamps/speedometer where you want them. Ex: height, angle if you have a pullback in the risers etc.
Mark the risers and clamps with a Sharpie. (This will come off easily with a decent chrome polish).

Once you know where you want everything, go ahead and remove the remaining plastic protective film from the mounting tape that is already stuck inside your cable clamps, put some loctite on the screw that tightens the cable clamp, and securely attach these to your risers. Now you can put your speedometer into the new housing and attach it to the clamps. The idiot lights match up no problem at all. No wire cutting, splicing, moving etc...
Shine everything up when you are done, and go for a test ride...

Attached are some picsl

That is NICE....... I was thinking about getting some T bars and was looking at different setups and I like what you did .... Accutronix makes a adapter for the speedo bracket you used 67293-95 this part says for 95-04 FXD any idea if this will work with a 05 fxdci speedo?

I like what you did there.... looks cool and different.... Can you see the speedo good?

Thanks. Naz

That looks good......You would think some manufacturer would make a bracket for the SG. Yankee Enginuity has a set up but its unclear if it works on the newer bikes. Its kinda costly to be experimenting.

Hows the view? You got a picture of the front end from the side?

How do you see it? It looks like it is hidden by the handlebar top clamp.

Naz_Man: The bracket works perfect. Like I said, idiot lights mount perfectly and speedometer fits fine. This bracket is also in my 2008 part catalog, and I can see the speedo a lot better than before.

cadore: I included a few more pics.

bigmikaele: The view of the speedo now is better than it was. When I put on the taller risers with a pullback, it changed the speedo angle to damn near vertical. Now it is actually back to the stock angle. The view is perfect from my riding position, but you can adjust the placement anywhere up or down the risers if the rider is taller or shorter. I have a better side shot attached.

I thought about doing that too, but I don't think I would be able to see it with straight 6" risers.

Hmmmm....this is an interesting idea.

I have mine mounted to the top clamp....it is easy to see BUT it disturbs the wind REAL BAD....causing a lot of turbulence in my face and ears.

I might have to take a look at doing this...it would move it out of the main airflow and still be usable...hmmmm

I can't offer any advise on this matter because I ride with a full face helmet. I like the location much better now though.....
