Brake Pad Question

Getting ready to change front and rear pads on my Dyna and the service manual says to take master cylinder covers off before pushing the pads apart. Is this necessary to get enough clearance to reinstall new pads? Seems like a potentially messy operation. I've changed pads on other bikes without having to do this, but I defer to the wisdom of the more experienced folks here. Thanks!

It will make it easier to push back, less pressure, but can be messy so push slowly so it won't squirt...

Use Lyndall pads. A much better pad. Almost dustless

I just finished replacing my rear pads with no problems and I did'nt remove the master cylinder covers. I have never removed the MC covers on any bike to replace pads . The only thing that I would do is when you are done press on the MC cover view glass with your finger to make sure its still seated properly, I guess it may be possible if your really forced the caliper pistons back into their bores super fast it could cause a problem.

Don't remove the master cylinder cover, you could be very sorry you did. I've seen a car after it was soaked in brake fluid, melted the paint right off it and it screwed up the metal enough the new paint didn't last long either. Just push the calipers back with a screwdriver when the old pads are still in there and you'll be alright.
