For breaking my new dyna in i changed the oil at 500 miles rather than 1,000 and i changed it again at 1,000.I'm at 1500 miles now and was contemplating switching to SYN3,But should i wait until 5,000 miles? I did wait til i had 5,000 miles on my 1200 sporty before switching to synthetic,But i cant remember why,Did I just make a number up? or did i read a recommendation somewhere? any ideas?
Not sure whether you received a recommendation or not, but I know the stealer that did my service in New Orleans recommended not changing until 5,000. I changed at 5,000 and am still worry free at almost 25,000.
Syn 3 is a blend of synth and reg oil.so maybe as a stepping stone, but Full synth should be down the road for you. I asked my dealer to use synth, and she laughed and said you don't need it! You need synth oil for racing , or if your in city traffic every day otherwise it's a luxury. i like to baby mine for those times I'm gunning her it kinda compensates! Next service they didn't ask and went straight back to 20w40 hd oil. I forgot to tell them to use synth. Next change I'm going to use amsoil and for sure will do the rest of the changes myself.
I always change to a Syn oil from the start, everything will still seal and break in properly while using a Syn oil. The longest I have waited before switching to syn oil is 100 miles, never any problems with bikes or cars.
The main thing is to just change your oil regularly as prescribed in the owners manual and you wont have any problems.
I switched to Syn3 at the 1k service, done at 500 miles cause I was going on a road trip. Switched to full synthetic (royal purple then to Mobil 1) at 5k.
Got 28k on it now and it aint blowed up yet. Based on my experience, you can switch to Syn at 500 and it aint gonna kill you
I switched to Mobil 1 at the 1k interval. Your serious ring seating, etc is all going to be done in the first 20-30 minutes of riding . .after that it's minimal.
Oh, and I did the change at 500, let the dealer do the 1K and I switched to Mobil1 at 1500. Couldn't stand the sound of marbles that the Syn3 was giving me.
