I had mainly been looking baggers, having had a road king as my previous bike - and THEY were selling for around $9,000 - $12,000 in years ranging from 1999 - 2005, just to give you an idea of comparison.
The street bobs I had been looking at, which bring you into the dyna family - were mostly 2006's and were around $8500 - $1000 - and mostly stock bikes with under 5,000 miles. There were very few 2007's and up - which is when they started giving them the 96" motors.
So - I say - it depends what you REALLY want, and what you want to spend.
Do you want the bike "ready to go" - are are you willing to shell out $1,000 or more & have to put some work in or take it to a shop for things like exhaust, controls, grips, pegs, detach sissy bar, etc?
Sounds like the bike you're looking at is just about where you want it - so you can buy it & ride it today. That's what I ended up with. Sure I'll make some mods of my own to it - but, as is, it's good to go & last me all summer without spending any more money (easier said than done tho! ha!)
However, just from my recent search experience, I think you may be able to find a considerably newer year bike for near the same price or a little more - probably mostly stock though.
Personally, I say get as new as you can, with as big a motor and low miles as you can find for the lowest price. Then, you can do whatever you like & won't have to worry about reliability due to age or, eventually, parts availability down the road.
The market is definitely saturated - and not by repo's. I bet if you're patient, around mid-june to july, there will be people GIVING their bikes away. A lot of people have reasonable dollar figures on their bikes for sale - as far as the dollars they put into the bike. However based on the current market, their bikes won't sell for those prices cuz there's plenty of cheaper alternatives where people need the money sooner than later. I've got a buddy with an 03 Fatboy that is laid out & GORGEOUS. He'd sell it for $14,500 - which is a steal for "that" bike. Unfortunately, there's so many fatboys that year & newer for 10, 11 & 12 grand that will sell before his.
Definitely a buyers market out there, that's for sure.
PS: 1 thing I learned from some friends experiences - don't be afraid of ebay & either traveling to pick up your bike or having it shipped. If my memory serves me correct, you can send a bike from one coast to another for less than a thousand dollars. Sometimes, the deals on there are just too darn good to pass up - even if they're 3 or 4 states way!
