I have an 05 FXD and I am doing some research. I'm looking at purchasing a used tank from a seller on craigslist, but before making the trip, wanted to know if his tank would fit on my frame. It looks like an older tank (gauging from the speedo, I'd guess early 90's). It has a square under belly... Anyway, here are the pictures. Additionally, if you could tell me around what year this tank was manufactured, I'd greatly appreciate it.
have you bothered to take your seat off to see how the tank mounts to the frame?
never mind the top mount but does it look like the lower mount even closely resembles what you have on a 2005?
i seriously doubt that will work. you need a tank from 1999 - 2005. I have an 02 FXD and got a 1999 Wide Glide tank off ebay for $150. Bolted right up.
i know i have not posted a lot - but i observe and search in the forums.
what i've learned here is that FXD and FXDI models built after 2004 use the same tank - straight bolt on ..... top and bottom (frame and console).
sure you can make any tank fit any frame - just depends on your cutting/welding/painting skills. i bet you can make a tank off a 1970 CB350 fit on a 2005 FXD with enough effort - but is that really the question?
I think he wants to move his speedo to the tank. So let me correct myself.
1999 - 2005 FXDWG tanks will bolt right up to your 2005 FXD.
If you have FI, then get an FI tank. If you have a carb like I do, then get a carbed tank.

you might be right about his intention being speedo relocation - it wasn't clear to me.
problem with the 04-05 models is that even if you have a carb model - going to an older tank creates a snowball that is difficult to avoid: new tank, then new console, then new speedo, then new seat - never ends - try to save a few bucks on a new tank and before you know it you've spent $500 trying to make it work.

...I'll go with my other option - moving speedo. (Which will require new bars. I put T-bars on a couple years back.) I found a really good forum on moving speedo. I've got bigger fish to fry.
