Looking back through this thread at the pics, I think it may be a little more difficult for me because I have an oil tank and chit in the way. Aside from dropping all this stuff off, there will be some tight spots here and there. If I did it, I would be doing everything, primary, tranny, all of it. The OP had a chrome kit, so a lot of that stuff just got taped. I wonder how this will work for a more extensive spray while "in the frame"

I painted my engine about 15 months ago. Still looks great. I used some brake cleaner on a rag and my finger to wipe the fins to give the stock look. Also I would recommend that you take off the covers and have them powdercoated in wrinkle or texture black. Mine are powdercoated as the exposure on the primary , cam and tranny covers is more exposed to chips from road debris than the rest of the engine. Also you can easily just tape off and cover the oil tank and other differences to paint the engine on your bike. It is a little more work, but worth it. One thing too, if you get some paint on the oil lines or anywhere else, brake cleaner will rub it right off. When I did my bike I took off the starter, primary and as much if the surrounding parts as I felt I could to get the engine painted the best way possible.
+1, got the itch for some cheap mods...figured I might do some custom paint work
any updates on how the rattle can has held up on the engine?
mine is still 100%. When I installed cams, a couple scratches were made, just sprayed a little paint on a small brush and dab it on. So easy to touch up if needed.
