Default Update - Pics (finally) Got "newer" pipes and handlebars for the 05 FXD revamp

I'll post pics when I get home from work. I tried to post the pics yesterday, but couldn't figure out how to shrink them down to size for posting on this forum. Anyway, I found some stock Wide Glide mini-apes. I'm gonna drill out holes for internal wiring and may send them out for chroming. I'm going to go with Rick1972's method of mounting the speedometer to the risers, and will buy an aftermarket handlebar clamp. I picked up some used Drag Specialty pipes and hope to have them ready for install when the time comes. I have a service manual for a 2003 Softail, this should serve me well as I did into the engine, correct? Oh, and as I don't have a garage, I've posted a request to rent out some space on craigslist. Any thoughts?

The pics from left to right: Port side of the FXD, starboard, the broken 2n1, a look at the front cam (from the starboard side), another view of the front cam (directly in front, sorry for the poor quality, but my camera wouldn't focus on something that close). I think there is a blown gasket on the front cam. There is an awful lot of oily carbon built up. You can tell where I wiped some of the crud away with my thump. I hope that it isn't anything more complicated than a blown gasket, but I'm going to take the rocker boxes of (both front and rear cam) to make sure all of the head bolts are in there correctly and to put new caskets on.

I got the Super Glide from a dude who didn't take care of it AT ALL (I'll post pics later). I got it for $2500 because dude just wanted to get it off his hands. He said he did most of the work himself; 9" T-bars, chrome outer primary cover (he had a dealership install the chrome inner primary cover, thank God), chrome transmission side cover, chrome rocker box lower and upper housing, chrome cam cover, and a bunch of over chrome cover knick-nacks... Dude told me that when he swapped out the rocker box covers that one of the head bolts didn't appear to go all the way back in... AHHHH!!! It looks sharp, but runs like hell!!! (I've never riden the bike, I fired it up and drove it up on a trailer and brought it home) Vibrates like no other, the samson two-in-one pipes had broken and the exhaust support bracket had fallen off. Dude had never had the bike serviced... I can only assume that neither oil nor the filter has never been changed. I'm enlisting my buddies help because he knows a little bit more about engines than I do. Once I get everything put back together, I'd like to lower it down for her and will probably need some more help.

What year is it. For 2500 bucks if the frame is straight it was well worth the money. This way you build it the way you want. My next bike will probably be a kit bike.

Read the thread.... exactly what do you need help with ?

Sounds like a teardown to the frame is in order. New gaskets, seals, cleaning. Engine teardown also, with the same treatment.

For 2500 bucks, you can afford to put some bucks towards her... but yeah, what year?

I can't believe I didn't mention the FXD is a 2005. The previous owner has no idea what the mileage is because he didn't reinstall the factory speedo. (He was like a 27 year old, spoiled rotten kid who went to college, got a degree, and moved back in with his parents... He thought he knew how to turn a wrench. To his credit he did follow the manual... Funny story, when I went to p/u the bike, he referred to his parents as roommates!) I'm gonna post a bunch of pics today. My primary bike is an '03 Duece.

Oh, man, if you already have a scooter to get your road fix then def tear it down. For the money you spent on the bike you can afford to do A LOT and still have less than NADA trade in value wrapped up in it. Yank the motor and start chucking parts in the trash. Get yourself an 05 service manual and try to tackle a lot of it yourself. Maybe talk to an indie shop about a motor build? I'm so jealous. This could be a sweet project!

Awesome grab! '05 for 2500? You 've just blown my mind. I read somewhere a factory HD rebuild is in the nehborhood of 3500. of course you can do more with that money elswhere, but you have to realize it will be worth twice your 6000$ once done! I would try it myself given space and time to do it...hobby type thing since you have another ride! Congratulations sir!
