Default Going to get oil cooler

After riding this Twin Cam in 90+ degree heat over the past several weeks, I think I'm going to pickup the 06 Dyna HD oil cooler kit from chicago HD tommorrow. These TC's run slightly hotter then my EVO or shovel based on my leg-o-meter!

First, since there is no oil tank, the engine is already down about 1/2 quart compared to a softail with the external oil bag. A little more capacity with the cooler is good right?!? Plus, the integrated oil tank on the Dyna motor doesn't help disapate heat like external oil tank bikes. I ride too much and hate 'thinking' about cooking my expensive bike's oil in the hotter weather far from home. Kinda a piece of mind thing.

Another interesting thing I've read in "Harley-Davidson Century" (good book BTW) was related to the costly delays of the TC engine. The engineers had no idea about engine oiling systems or how they worked (if you can believe that) and had to re-learn engine oiling since that last guy who designed a new big twin oiling system was Bill Harley on the knucklehead. They couldn't keep the engine oil temp under control....it was peaking at over 260-280+ degrees constant. Cut to the chase, the engineers begged the board to allow a mandatory oil cooler (and had one designed like the premium cooler) but were stoutly declined as an external cooler was seen as a band-aid. They had to fight tooth and nail for every degree they could get from then on. The fix involved some simple fixes like adding extra cooling fins, the oil jets to cool the piston bottom's and changing a few items but the biggest culprit to the heating issue was the flow of oil to the heads. The engineers had designed a high volume oil suppily to the heads to cool them but found the returned oil superheated everything. Their fix was to limit the oil suppily to the heads by 1/4 to 1/6th of the original design.

After reading the engineers struggles to keep these engines temperatures under control and my hot weather experience makes this an easy decision. Comments, thoughts and discussion appreciated as always.

I heard/read the same thing about the old engineers being gone from the moco and the new guys missing out on some of the wisdom. Sounds like a why not for the ext. oil cooler.

when i was building my roadstar warrior i talked with Nigel Patrick about having an oil cooler....he said that the only coolers that do any good for the motor are the ones that resemble a car radiator.....the ones that mount on your downtube and are chrome dont cool your motor what so ever...they are more for bling than anything else....he's tested it and makes some of the fastest bikes in the 1/4 mile....i took his word for it and opted to put my money into something more functional

My new 2006 DWGI seemed to run hotter than my 2001 Dyna Super Glide. Due to the high temperatures in Texas I immediatley installed the HD Premium Oil Cooler. For some extra protection I am runing Mobil 1 20-50 V-Twin oil. It still runs hot.

great info fl.
Summer is over here in the land downunder but it gets pretty hot, and I've thought about how hot the engine gets especially in traffic.

Any ideas on the cost ?

My neighbor has a bagger and swears by the oil coolers. But, I have heard they barely work. Please let us know how it works. I'm fighting the heat with synthetic oil.

I had the factory cooler installed on mine last year at H-D of Frederick. They only work if you are moving unless you install a thermostatically controlled fan on them. There is a few good articles, I believe in the tech section, about them, positive and negative. Read them before you purchase one.
