Its just the spray paint from harley. I removed the outer covers. (pretty easy). I cleaned them up so there was no dirt or oil on them. Then just sprayed the parts with the paint.
You dont have to bake the paint. The can says the paint will cure in about 4 days. But if you wanna speed the process up you can put it in the oven on 180 Degrees. All it does is dry or cure the paint faster. Looks pretty good.
The paint I used was Texture Black. they also have wrinkle black and flat black.
Hope that helps. I have a couple of other things to add and paint. Will post pics when its done.
I am waiting for the shocks and AC cover.
Cool - so there's no danger of bits dropping out when you removed the covers!!
That's the only thing that worries me
How long did you put the bits in the oven for?
Just ordered the spray so looking forward to giving it a go - I assume it's basically the "rough" black finish you find on some of the other Big Twins?
IT CAME OUT REALLY AWESOME, LOOKS ALMOST FACTORY DONE. I HAVE JUST ONE QUESTION .... ARE YOU PLANNING TO PAINT THE BLOCK AND THE REST OF THE TRANNY TO TOTALLY BLACK IT OUT ? YOU DID A REALLY GREAT JOB SO FAR !
Plasma, The covers come off without a problem. There is no messing with any of the components, they are just covers. I put them in the oven for about an hour at 180 deg. It does come out just like the black powder coated engines from HD.
Stinky. I dont think I am gonna do the block or the rest of the tranny. I am gonna do the top cover right above the tranny to give some black color in there. I think I like the contrast of having the silver mixed in there. I dont want a totally black bike just a nice flow. I have the black round AC cover to fit right on the cleaner. It has a silver maltese cross in it. That will get rid of the football and tie in the timing cover and trans cover.
I also have the black progressive 412's coming so that should lower the bike so you only see the rim from the side profile. This winter I am gonna figure out cutting alot of the rear fender off. I just have to decide how I want to do it. One other thing. now I really like the black wrapped pipes. But I just got the big radius. What do you guys think the Big Radius would look like wrapped in black ??
Thanks for all the compliments, I am learning as I go here so if you have any questions I will be glad to share what I have done and how I have done it good or bad. Some people are afraid to mess with there bike(my father). I am opposite, I have only had the bike a month. He thought I was crazy to start taking things off and spray painting them with me not ever painting anything before. I did however talk with the dealer and they explained to me that it would look pretty close to what they would do in the factory so that made feel more at ease in doing it.
You just have to get brave enough to start taking things apart. I know we all pay alot for the bikes and dont want to break anything, but they way I look at is I am never gonna mess with the engine or tranny as far as insides go, so i feel comfy messing with the cosmetics without fear of ruining the bike. Hey its only paint. If you dont like it paint it back. Good luck and thanks.
mcurry5... Your right go for it... your paint ideas are pretty much what I had in mind to do... The only thing I fear is stripping out a screw... that's no big deal just a pain... YOU MUST HAVE A VERY UNDERSTANDING WIFE...I don't think I can get my wife's ok on the oven...LOL
