Default Three down, one won't be getting back up!

A good number of the folks in my riding group got together Sunday to take a 400 mile trip from central VA to do the Tail of the Dragon. Tragedy struck the group as they entered a curve on a rural road halfway through their journey.

A drunk driver doing in access of 80 mph in this curve wandered onto the wrong side of the road. The posted speed limit was 45. As he approach the oncoming group of motorcyclist, he swerved to attempt to get back in his lane. Losing control of his vehicle, he struck the lead bike head on killing the rider instantly. Miraculously, he missed the second bike, but came back into their lane to collide with the third and the fourth bikes. Both riders went down and sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The last five bikes in the group were able to maintain control of their rides, enough to stop and remain upright and uninjured.

The driver of the car is also hospitalized and on life-support. He'd just had a D.W.I. a week prior and was driving drunk again, while his license was revoked from the previous arrest.

Seems as there was absolutely nothing any of the struck riders could have done to avoid the collisions. Ironically, the rider who was killed had just learned to walk again from an accident he had 18 months ago, where he was struck while sitting at a stop sign leaving his sub-division by a car which had lost control. Again, his previous accident was one which he did nothing to contribute to it, and there was nothing he could have done to avoid it. He was proudly riding his new Street Glide on this trip after initially being told he would be wheelchair bound the rest of his life after his prior accident.

I'd like to ask you guys for your prayers and thoughts for the riders and their families. While you share these thoughts and prayers, please think of yourselves and be careful out there. This **** is dangerous.

John

Wow that really sucks! That stupid **** happens way to often. A rider here had his leg severed at the knee by an un licensed drunk driver a few weeks ago. On a corner of a county road. Hit and run to boot. Luckily he got caught.

My condolences go out to family's involved.
