problem with clutch

i got a clutch pack/clutch adjustment question while were on the subject...
kinda hard to put in writing but i'll give it a shot. when you let the clutch out after shiting, it seems to activate about half way out and then stops activating when the lever reach the stop. i think it would activate just a little off the grip and stop activating before it reachs the end of travel... is there any way to get "more" clutch or is what i have sound about normal. i would think this would have to do more with clutch pack adjusment b/c the other adjustment is for the lever only right??? any help would be appreciated!!!

Just wanted it to be at a simple level, without a lot of explanation... and really not sure what the guy did to begin with.... "handlebar kit"... just wanted to know what that was, before going much further. Can' assume too much and lead the guy in the wrong direction...

Do yourself a big favor and by the Fix My Hog videos. They are inexpensive and go in to detail on how to adjust your clutch.
1. Loosen the jam nut on the clutch cable and turn the adjustment nut until you clutch lever can be pulled all the way to the grip and stays there.
2. Take off the primary derby cover.
3. Loosen jam nut
4. Turn screw out untill it rotates freely.
5. Turn screw in until it begins to depress the diaphram. At the point of diaphram engagement turn the screw in 1/2 to 1 full turn.
6. Tighten jam nut to torque specs. I forget right now what it is so you will have to look that up or maybe someone else knows.
7. Replace derby cover.
8. Turn adjustment nut on cable. You will see the lever begin to move off the grip.
9. stop turning and tighten the jam nut when you have 1/16 to 1/8 gap between the base of the clutch lever and the clutch lever mount
It's a quick and easy job.

You need to turn the screw OUT a half to a full turn. If you turn it in, you will have major slippage. I accidentally did the first time, and it was an easy mix-up.
I've seen a lot of questions lately about clutch adjustments, maybe make note of beginning settings so you would have something to fall back on before things get waaaay out of hand, witness marks, whatever, Makes sense any time you work on your bike. We all have cameras on our cell phones, take some pictures to have something to look at. my .02
do a search for easy clutch adjustment. that threads goes into detail on how to adjust the clutch so that it engages correctly. after loosening your cable back the clutch adjuster nut out and while holding your clutch lever in slowly tighten down the clutch adjuster just until you feel the lever pull from your bar. this method set my clutch just how i like it. starts to engage about 1/4 inch off the bars. hope this helps

Here is an almost fool proof method for clutch adjustment. It takes the guesswork out of the "feel" for the adjuster.
Once you have opened up the derby cover and are ready to proceed...
1)Collapse the adjuster on the cable sleeve all the way.
2)Pull the lever against the bar and hold it there with slight force.
3)Turn the pushrod adjuster bolt in while holding the lever against the bar lightly until it starts to force the lever away for some distance. (Do this more than once to get the feel). While keeping light pressure on the lever back the adjuster bolt out just until the lever touches the bar again and then another little bit, about 1/2 turn , then lock it.
4)Adjust the cable freeplay at the lever for 1/16" free play.
You should be good to go .
Always adjust the clutch on a cold bike for best results.
**It's better to adjust the clutch so that it starts to grab at least an inch or more from the bar for complete disc separation, which translates into better/quieter shifting.Using this method, you can "feel" where the lever is going to grab with a little practice.
Buy yourself a cheap 11/16 deep well socket and weld a nut on top of it. This makes the perfect tool for the adjuster lock nut. You can then use an Allen wrench inside the socket and a wrench on the nut you have just welded on. Makes it a lot simpler.
