Fat Bob Trouble
I was working on the back fender, had the rear elevated with the shocks off and the wheel on the ground.
I noticed the wheel was a little wobbly… as I wiggled the wheel I could see the swing arm rocking side to side at the connection to the transmission.
I removed the wheel & swing arm to inspect the bearing & bushing. My owner’s manual tells me this needs to be done at the 30,000 mile service interval… in order to keep my new motorcycle warranty in force.
The bearing was definitely worn so I took the swing arm to the dealer’s service department. They agreed to rebuild it for free as a warranty claim… but I would have to bring the whole bike in. So I scheduled an appointment, took it home & reassembled my bike.
I’m quite certain now what that “jello” feel is when I accelerate through a left turn from a stop light. It’s kind of like that feeling when you’re riding out in the country on a hot summer day & your tire slips on one of those “fill-in-crack” tar repair strips.
I wanted to post this because removal of the swing arm seems to be the only way to inspect the bearing & the bushing. For those of you who don’t do your own service I think this would be worth the extra hour service charge when you have the rear tire replaced.
So I would suggest that you check your bearings before your warranty expires.
