It's the risk we all chose to take. I take my 7 year old on the back seat as well for his burger and fries. That's the way he loves it. Always make him wear eye protection and helmet...and I go extra alert and half as fast I think I should. Will get a back rest for him soon. Good luck, dude.
I am happy to hear you and your son are doing well. That could have been worse.
I would recommend that you practice your quick stops with a passenger. I always practice quick stops in a controlled envoriment.
My wife would always ride with me when i would practice quick stops in a empty parking lot near my house. She always hated doing it. Then one do a car ran a red light and I was able to perform a quick stop with out even thinking about it.
My wife now asks me if I want to go practice quick stops.
That sounds like a very good ideal. as a golfer I know what you mean about muscle memory.
Does your state require helmets? Just curious. Glad your boy made it through without injury. That's the main part.
I NEVER ride without either my leather jacket or if it's too hot outside my "Draggin" kevlar shirt. Here is a link to their site. I have the full lower liners to wear under my jeans and one of their shirts.
Not only do I live in a retirement community, but also a rural area where deer are out and about all the time....... so between elderly drivers and the wildlife population, It's not a matter of "IF"......it's "WHEN"......and personally, I'd prefer my skin to stay attached.
Hope you get to feeling better soon.......
my state does not have a helmet law. but that said i wear a helmet about 95% of the time. my son always. Road rash does hurt. I started wearing my jacket more often.
Went down over the weekend. One of my first thoughts after I stopped rolling was that I was glad my wife hadn't been on the back like we planned. Glad y'all are ok. It's definitely a wake up and smell the roses moment.
My wife later told me that had she been on the bike when I dump it she would had gotten up and beat me half to death and sold the bike on the spot. LOL. that being said she still rides with me and my son still wants to ride. He really loves to ride and my wife does too. We Have talk about it before and she understand that there is a certain amount of risk that goes with it.
Glad to hear you and your son are okay. Went down with my wife on the back about 6 years ago. Making a corner and out of nowhere loose gravel. Bike spun around, me with it, and wife managed to be okay. Road rash on my back because it was so hot out I wasn't wearing my jacket. She helped me lift bike off my leg. Managed to only damage primary cover because I tried to ride it out and didn't let go. Had some initial jitters when I first got back on, but they went away once i got back in the flow of it. Ride defensive my friend, especially with your 10 year old, or any passenger on the back. They are at the mercy and skills of the driver. Take care.
