1) so glad you and son are OK.That is the most important.
2) take care of that roadrash.I got a secondary infection from it once.Keep it clean with a lot of neo-sporin on it
3) when ya get back on the road, practice stops using the front brake as your primary brake.coming from a sportbike background ,remember the front brake is your friend.
Yep. Same here.
I remember my first track day, the coaches told us all to leave the rear brake alone, to not even touch it.
Said at the speeds we were going to go, using the rear brakes could cause the rear to lock up. I'm so accustomed to depending on my fronts for braking now. Only started using the rear when i got onto my harley.
Glad all is well with you and your son!! Everyone here has had to,or will "panic stop" in the future. Reaction takes over and when that rear end starts coming around it is a sick feeling. Great attitude by the way....
Thank you and all the other for your replys and comments. Most all seem to understand what I went thru and didn't beat me up to bad for my mistake. I got alot of sugguestions on how to prevent this from happening again and I do appricate all the kind words for my Son and Me. thanks again.
glad you both are ok! My buddy actually went down this past sat. group ride, he was leading, and i was behind him. he went into a hairpin turn and just misjudged it. next thing i know i see him hit the gaurd rail on the right, the the bike slams down on the left, landing on top of his leg. to avoid hitting him i slam on the break and t bone the gaurd rail. i was going slwo enough that i didnt get hurt, or cause any real damage to my bike. My friend on the other hand suffered a broken right leg, jsut above the ankle. He hit one of the posts on the gaurd rail. He is actually gettign out of surgery this very moment. they had to put a plate and a couple screws in. mind this all happened going 5mph... anyway, didnt mean to hijack the thread, awesome that you and your son are ok. bikes are rebuildable, life is not. count your blessings, and make sure not to take for granted the important things.
Thanks for sharring your story. Man I hated hearing that about you friend. I do hope and will pray for his quick recovery. I'm glad that you were ok. take care.
i am really glad that you and your son are alright...thank God for that...all three of my sons ride with me and when they do i am very nervous for that reason...anything can happen...remember,it's not a mistake if you learn from it
i always wanted my feet to be up on the highway pegs but felt like it took forever to get to the brake or shifter - forward controls give you both. seems to me it would be better to lock the rear than the front - at least you still have control. if you have the chance - messing around on larger dirt bikes lets you try things like locking the rear tire until you come to a stop or trail braking into a corner (locking the rear wheel while entering/through the first part of a corner) and seeing how that feels without the high stakes. if you lock the rear up, try to get almost on the tank and hug it with your knees (my father in law flat tracked in his day and gave me that tidbit when i was first learning to ride motorcycles )- you can wag the tail all over the place and stay up - it is definitely tougher with a passenger though - the back end really likes to come around for sure. taking the bike down and avoiding the collision saved your *** - my buddy low sided his sportster last weekend, slid across a lane and wedged him and his bike under a truck waiting to turn in the turn lane - he wasn't going more than 15mph - sprained ankle, twisted knee, 4 cracked ribs - my wife just upped my life insurance policy - weird
Hearing about accidents makes us all more aware. Wearing the protective clothes despite the heat will certainly help but not prevent the broken knee. Stay safe!!
Thank you for the reminder ,and I am glad you are all right there is not enough of us we dont need to loose another brother of the road and future one !!!
Emergency vehicles are supposed to stop for red lights, even when running lights and sirens. Glad your both ok.
This is what I was going to say. I've driven ambulances for 6 years, and it was my responsibility to stop at a red light and be sure the traffic with the green was stopping for me before I proceeded through.
Just in case anything comes up later, I hope you filled out a police report.
