Man I was pissed. I started my ape install today @ 4pm, and I'm still not done. Things were moving along great until I installed the clutch cable. Got it in the housing, attached the first bolt, and snap! What I dont understand is, I was following the torque settings (84-108, I used 90). Thank goodness there was enough of the bolt (even though it was a shorter one) to get out using needle nose vice grips.
So for those who have done this in the past, what torque setting did you use? I'm going to the stealer tomorrow to get another bolt, for now I just tightened them down with a socket, but would like to make sure I have no leaks in the future.
Had the same thing happen to me but on the derby cover. DID NOT OVERTORQUE OR USE THE WRONG SCALE. I was snugging the bolt down and had just picked up my torque wrench and put it into the torx head and started to tighten and the head popped off cleanly. Ordered a completely new set just in case the others go in the same fashion.
Same as you, I was able to turn the bolt out with pliers because it wasn't tightened in yet!
Get a new gasket if you're going to back any of the other bolts out and/or re-install the cover. The transmission cover gasket is a one time only type, since it's paper and compresses to shape the first time it's torqued down.
They're cheap, so I bought 2 when I was installing my apes. Nice to have a spare in case I ripped one or wanted to remove the trans cover again for whatever reason.
i keep a very small pipe wrench, the kind that's almost cartoonish small, in my toolbox for just such things. it's like four inches long. and it's in the same drawer of my macsimizer as the 24 inch pipe wrenches. i use the 24" pipe wrenches to work on yamaha roadliners.
