Look what happened to GM, Chrysler and Ford when people decided to buy FOREIGN IMPORTS. How many of your brothers and sisters are no longer STEEL WORKERS, TEXTILE WORKERS, FACTORY WORKERS or work at the small independent tool and die shops or other small spin off parts suppliers? Sure Harley's are OVERPRICED.... but you still bought one didn't you? So if you are cash strapped, I can fully understand doing it yourself. But if you can afford to have it done by a Dealers who you've built up a rapport with, and trust.....then I'm for supporting them. Now I'll take my soap box and leave.
When they stop charging $30 for T-shirts made in China I'll start worrying about my need to support them.

If confident with your own wrenching .. Go for it ..But actually if a true 10,000 mile service is done 300.00 is a fair ball park price...

YourOldDog........ My post specifically said " WHEN THE RIDING SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE ......not in the Spring when everyone has ants in their pants and wants a bike to ride.......so you're saying "THAT'S NOT TRUE" is a little premature. I dont know how the economy is doing in New York State, but there are deals to be had in Michigan, and if One doesnt deal, there are others who might.

I would like to use the dealers but I'm not going to be a patsy because it's got the glorius HD on it.
And if you're not going to be a patsy because it has HD on it, then why did you buy a HARLEY in the first place. Their service is high priced, their parts are high priced and their bikes are high priced...... I dont get the condemnation in your statement about HD, then you go out and buy one.

As for your $299. "money well spent"...... Congratulations on your prowess for being able to do your own maintenance. Many of us dont have the skill or tools, nor the garage to do it. Furthermore, many also feel taking a bike in to an authorized dealer for servicing our $25,000-$35,000 investment...is money well spent, especially if they happen to catch something which could prove to be potentially dangerous. Many have a 7 year warranty which could become VOID if the bike isn't serviced by them as well.

If you're cash poor or just like to tinker and have the tools and knowledge to do it.....then go for it. But dont insinuate others are "fools" or waste their money if they dont.

Sorry LWOS - but I have to comment; your logic sucks here. Your statement above, in MY opinion, should have said "If you are unable to work on your bike yourself, then pay someone else to do it."

I take great offense to your line of thinking. Becase I forked over enough cash to get a bike made by Harley Davidson, I should make it a point to fork over as much of my cash to that company - in order to ensure it exists for generations & generations? I think not. If anything - the onus falls on Harley Davidson to continue to make products that people want to spend money on - that are affordable (read: worth the price you pay for); this include the bikes, merchandise, and services.

It is not "my" responsibility to ensure their success or longevity. To be honest, if I want to buy a bike and never deal with Harley or anything related to Harley Davidson again - so be it - that's my perogitive - my choice. I feel as though you're trying to "guilt" people into sticking on the HD line. That sucks.

I love my bike. I love Harley's. I shell out cash for plenty of overpriced HD items - why? Because I like them - and when you like something, sometimes you don't make wise financial decisions & buy stuff even if it is over priced. You just "gotta have it".

Ya know - some folks say that "freedom" is the one word that best describes what Harley Davdison stands for. What you stated flies directly in the face of that.

Some folks also believe if you can't pick up your bike - or you don't know how to change fluids & wrench on one, you shouldn't have one. But you won't hear me make that case in this thread or any other. I just don't get the point of your first post, or the logic you've tried to explain in it & the subsequent posts.

By your logic, if I'm wealthy, I should only buy Harley merchandise & services - to help keep them alive. That's ridiculous. Unfortunately, I'm not rich, and if I was - I'd still spend my money as wisely as I could - on goods & services that earned my consideration.

Don't get me wrong folks - I've had plenty of great experiences with HD; love the company & its products. By the same token, it IS true they're over priced on many things - regardless of WHY they feel they have to over price things. That's not my concern. My concern is spending my money wisely. Find the best bang for my buck. There are many choices besides Harley Davidson for all of my motorcycle needs - and I'll consider as many as I can to make a wise decision - just as the OP has done by opening up this thread.

Oh - and all dealerships have families & loved ones that live & work in your community...regardless of brand. I don't get that statement. Additionally, my bike isn't worth $25k - $35...maybe yours is...but I bought MY bike because for the price, I got the look, sound & feel that no other bike provided. If it said Honda or Suzuki and gave me the same warm fuzzy feeling, guess what? I'd be owning one of those...I live in Cleveland, my family owns an industrial tool distributorship, so I know all about the lack of jobs in the steel & machining businesses (and it's why "I" dont' work for my family; I see the writing on the wall & am in an industry I feel is much safer & more lucrative)..."buy American" really doesn't have a whole lot to do with it tho...try the unions who drove up the price of labor & made it a no brainer for companies to move jobs overseas...but that's a whole other topic...

Plenty have answered the OP's question: yes, it sounds a little high - but not much. The 10k covers a lot of different checks. If you don't wrench on things, you should still consider having a true 10k service done (just because his bike was checked before purchase doesn't mean all the 10k items were checked - he'll have to compare; a 7500 service is different than a 10k, so if that's all that was done - then a full 10k should be in order). Definitely consider an indy - and above all - if you pay someone to perform the work, make sure you trust them to do it & do it right, regardless of what you pay.

Support Harley just for the sake of supporting the company....bah...that ticks me off...I need some fresh air...

Well, take me out back and just shoot me then....... My god. Talk about going off the deep end over nothing. Why would YOU PERSONALLY take great offense to what I was THINKING? My posts weren't directed to YOU or ANY ONE ELSE for that matter.
Maybe you're just so angry, you cant see the forrest for the trees.

And I thought only Women had PMS.

In any event....... per your own words.......You DO need some fresh air.

Simple point in mind I enjoy doing my own wrenching .. But is not a requirement to enjoy Riding .. I do throw my local indy a few bucks now and then because with his talent would hate to lose him in our small town...

funny stuff here.. thats the great thing abut Hd's you don't have to be the sharpest tack in the pack to fix it. or service it.. but if you want to pay for someone else to do it. fine it's your money.. i personally enjoy doing all i can to my ride.. note i said "my ride" . Do it your self bud save your self some coin , go buy manuals , lift and some of the tools .. plus you can get a case of whatever you want to change your fluids with.. ..
don't fear , HD is not going anywhere. , they wont be killing that cash cow for a long time..

LOWS- Just like GM and the others, HD has price their products out of the market! And not giving the consumer what there asking for. I live in Michigan as you do, wake Up!!! Yes and HD may go under and come back with a brain!
