Default p052 code on 06 dyna..."low Voltage EFI"..Battery? Regulator? Stator? Help!

A friend of mine has a 2006 Dyna (street bob I believe) and the battery and check engine lights are on. I figured out how to read the code and its spitting out a P052" Which is "Low Voltage EFI"

I searched the forums and google to find a few people having this issue.

The proposed things people have found include:
-Bad Battery
-Wear hole in battery cable insulation resulting in arching against the frame
-Bad Voltage Regulator
-Bad Stator

I left it on a battery tender junior for 14 hours and then took it in to have it tested. So far we pulled the battery and I had it tested. It was reading as "OK" but it was not fully charged. The printout from the battery test said possible charging issue. We have it on a charger right now @ 2 amps.

Do the above possibilities sound right? Anything else probable that it could be?

I am not sure if a new battery is in order or not...it did test "OK" but since the voltage is down im not sure if the battery is slowly going south or if its a charging issue.

How can we test the voltage regulator? Is it like a rectifier where when it pops it usually does not work at all? The regulator is on the front frame of the bike, behind the front tire correct?

How can we test the stator without pulling it out?

How hard is it to get to the stator should it need to be replaced or rewound?

I have experience working on 1/1 cars and quads but never on bikes so I know the basic principles but have never messed with a harley before!

Thanks so much in advance!
Mike

Almost willing to bet the stator is gone or on it's way. The 06 Dynas had a problem with this as well as the inner primary bearing. I believe it's an alignment issue along with poor design. I understand the fix involves replacement of the inner primary case as well as some welding. Their are 8 small screws that hold the stator in place, and these back out and trash everything in there! The early 06 Dyna line were sold with a letter from the factory stating that the IPB would be replaced every 15k miles at no cost to the customer. Anyway, look into the stator and I believe you'll find your problem.

Hmmm ya my buddy did mention some dyna's having stator issues (something about some being welded, some being bolted).

So how could one figure out if this particular bike is good for the free replacement parts? He bought the bike new so I will have to ask him if that was mentioned.

Would a build number/date or vin number aid in determining if the replacement applies to this bike?

On a side note...how hard is it to replace a stator on a harley? I am guessing anything inside the primary is going to be quite a few hours at the shop!

Thanks for much for the help!

Roost, sorry I didn't get back right away. I'd just talk to the local dealer to see what they say about any "free" replacement possibilities. I do know they're covering the inner bearing issue, as my wife just had hers done for the 2nd time (32K mi) and it's 2 years out of warranty. Still waiting for a determination from the local about the stator. They did tell me the bolts had been replaced with larger ones, but they're researching to see if the factory will eat the fix. I read somewhere that the "correct" fix for both issues (inner primary bearing and stator) is to replace the inner primary case (and maybe the outer transmission case?) with the parts for 07 as it's a different case and alignment that apparently has cured the problems found in the 06 line.
