Apes or drag bars.

You can get bars made for internal wiring. 12"ers are just monkey bars . If you are going with apes get 'em a little higher. At least 14". Mine are 16" and all's good.

I also had both and for agressive riding in the city it is drag bars. For someone with back or arm, neck pain go with the apes. You are sitting straight up. As for long rides I have done quite a few and I have 18s and use the throttle lock and the velcro on Cramp Busters. To each his/her own........

Since I'm in a similar boat deciding between Z-Bars/Apes and Dragbars, I'll add my 2-cents...
Apes
(a) Apes enlarge the appearance of the frontend and improves aesthetics especially if your two up, carrying rack luggage, or ride with a windshield.
(b) Fat or Wide Apes are the only way to go, otherwise I think handling is compromised but YMMV depending on the kind of rider you are.
(c) Z-Bars are my personal favorite, although it's difficult finding a wide or fat variety. The sharp angles of the Z-bar also gives the appearance of having taller bars
Drag
(a) It's hard for me to quantify how the handling is improved, but I think it's an accepted theory.
(b) If Drag Bars detract from your comfort, then shop around for a set of Risers that work for your body posture
(c) Risers can add and detract a lot from the appearance of drag bars, although that may be a personal opinion.
(d) Drag bars look awkward when accompanied by a windshield. Some of my friends who are more seasoned riders had a list of other derogatory comments for the faux pas.
Good Luck and let me know if you come across some fat or wide Z-Bars
