I have a 09 DL and have 1200 miles on it so far and was looking to upgrade the bars. Reason being is my shoulders get very stiff after about 2 hours of riding. Are there bars that would promote a more comfortable ride for the long haul?
Have you tried adjusting your stock bars. But to answer your question yes there are numerous bars available for your bike to increase your comfort. Check H-D, Wild1/Chubby and Carlini just to name a few. Just check to see if you will need to replace cables and extend wires on whatever bars you may choose. Another thought might be a new seat.
This is my first HD too. I honestly thought Apes would be the most uncomfortable thing in the world, but I always loved the style. I gave them a shot.
At first, I did not like them much as I felt cramped. I read on here about guys adjusting them forward or rearward to gain more comfort.
I rolled by bars forward and bing! That was all it took.
So, X2 on adjusting your stock bars first. The seat is another area most address as I plan to as well. Also, pay attention to your foot/leg position as that can place more strain on your back/shoulder area.
Best to have someone take a picture of your posture/seating position and see what might be able to change for more comfort.
Fat mini apes on my FXDC... very nice, short or long haul. Bars are 10.5" on 4" risers. Forward controls, and Mustange vintage wide solo, 1/2" shorter Progressive 412HD rear shocks
I'm 5'9" and this combination is very comfortable for me. I would suggest sitting on / getting to ride some bikes with different combinations... dealer would be the best source of bikes to check out/test ride.
