I know.....I know. I should secure my Garmin GPS Nuvi with the proper mounting hardware BUT I'm leaving in the AM for a 300 mile trip, mostly on secondary roads, and don't want to wait for my Ram Mount to arrive next week.
Anyone have any road experience with using the Garmin suction mount on their bikes ?
It won't budge at all, feels tight and solid on the gas tank shown here, unless of course I release the suction cup lever.
Should I go for it ? What's the worst that can happen ? She flys off and I go buy a paper map.
Why don't you chain together 3-4 zip-ties and attach one end to your handlebars? That way if the suction cup thing loses grip the garmin will only fall a few inches and dangle by the zip-ties and you can remount it? I'm too damn cheap to risk something like you're doing without having some kind of "save my ***" backup in place. Good luck.
Keep in mind the rubber is flexible and as you ride the vibrations will create movement in the suction cup. Any abrasive trapped under the suction cup, or in the rubber compound (think carbon black) will be working on your clearcoat/paint finish. You'll end up with a witness mark on your tank.
I like the speedo bezel idea, or do you have a smooth gas cap that would be large enough to attatch the cup to and strong enough to not twist off?
