Sorry if this has been posted but the search did not have what I was looking for. I have a 09 Super Glide that I just purchased and I was wanting to add the forward controls as my last mod. My main and only worrying question is do you have to pull the primary cover off to remove the shaft or can you just leave it and cap it off. I have seen online some controls that say you dont have to remove it like the kuryakyn controls. The dealer has said you have to remove the shaft and it is like 400 bucks for them to do it. Any help would be great.
I took my FXDL in and spent the $400 after forward control purchase, as I only had the bike 2 weeks and was not about to pull the clutch, etc.... that was needed to do the install. The newness is worn off now, so doing it would be a different story.
Do get the service manual if doing it yourself, as it has fairly good illustrations as well as all the torque specs.
Kuryakyn's kit definitely doesn't require removing any components except the mid controls themselves. It comes with a cap to put over the mid-shift spline. I suppose, if you could find a cap, you could do the same thing with the HD forwards. I like my Kury's. I'm on my 2nd set - first the standard length and now the extended ones.
I did forwards on my '09 FXDC a couple months ago. I removed the inner and outer primary and installed a chrome inner at the same time. I have a service manual and bought a few large sockets and it was a very easy job to do and do it right, not that hacksawing the old shifter arm is wrong it just isnt the way I wanted to do the job. Took just a couple hours max. The clutch was not a big deal, dive in and do it. I still saved money over what the dealer wanted to do it and got the chrome inner off ebay for about $250 if I remember right.
when i had them installed on my 08 (HD forward controls) I don't believe the dealer removed the the shaft, I believe they just put a cap on it...
I didn't get a shaft in any of my stock parts when they returned them..
They only charged me like $160 to put them on too...
I have an 07 FXDC and I installed the HD forwards without removing the mid shifter shaft. When I removed the stock shifter from the shifter shaft pline, I pushed the end of the splined shaft towards the engine and tucked the other end of the shifter shaft behind a bolt on the engine. The attached pictures will show what I mean. Doing it this way you won't have to remove the primaries or cut the shifter shaft. When doing this the end of the shifter shaft ends up being flush to the outer primary. To me that looks fine, but you could probably put some kind of a cap on if you like. I also left the existing shifter to the tranny, instead of using the one from the kit. I also replaced the shift linkage that comes with the kit with the HD 33815-06, that has the better rod ends. This is just another option for you. It has worked well for me with no complaints.

Regardless of which kit you use, you don't have to remove the primary to remove the original shifter shaft, or to swap out the rear shift lever that only comes with the 06 and later Harley Davidson kit. Instructions below are for the 06 and up Dyna's using the 05 and earlier Harley Davidson kit.

Both can be done without removing the primary.
I installed the 2005 kit (P/N 49080-03A)with a longer 2006 custom polished stainless steel shift rod (P/N 33815-06)that comes with the stronger heim joints (they won't break like the original joints). You have to use a longer shift rod with the 2005 kit other wise the front shift lever will hit the primary when you up shift. The custom shift rods are a lot nicer then the cadmium plated shift rod in the kit and the original that came with the bike.
Removing the original shift shaft lever
Get a hacksaw blade and tape each end with duct tape, leaving about two inches exposed in the middle. Also put some duct tape on the primary and cylinder cooling fins. Tape a wrench on one end to get a better grip (on the end of the blade so as you pull on the wrench you will be on the cutting stroke of the blade). Slip the blade between the primary and engine from the bottom of the bike with the wrench end on the bottom. Position the shaft so you can cut about a quarter inch from the lever (not in the welded area). Use your other hand to guide the top of the blade as you cut. After cutting through, the shaft will slide right out, and the lever will just fall to the floor.
Cover for the original shift shaft lever hole
I used a chrome carriage bolt http://www.chromebolt.com/51618-x-134-chrome-carriage-bolt-p-845.html, and put a two inch piece of rubber hose on the threads then added some shrink sleeving on the hose to get a nice snug press fit into the empty shaft hole. If you have a black primary: Paint a unplated carriage bolt. Aluminum cover: Scotch brite a chrome carriage bolt.
I've heard others say they have had problems with finding neutral by retaining the shifter arm used with mids, has this also been your experience??
I have heard the same thing and I have heard others that have no problem finding neutral. I'm one of the ones that have no problem finding neutral. I don't know what the difference is, why some do and some don't.
