I had a problem with the circuit board in the tail light burning out after the lens filled with water in the rain. The dealer replaced it two weeks ago under warranty.
I took the lens off today and a another load of water poured out. I noticed that there are two holes behind the lens above the circuit board which are big enough to poke your finger through. They go straight through the fender right where the water sprays up from the tyre.
What a stupid design. No wonder the board short circuits and burns out. I guess it's done on purpose to make sure they sell more parts or maybe I shouldn't be riding a Harley in the rain.
I'm going to plug up the holes and spray some varnish onto the circuit board.
Living in Alberta and riding in BC as much as i can, i have been in the rain a lot, never had a problem with the circuit board or water collection, just condensation, although my tail light has not worked for 2 years (it is a wire i will look at this winter)
My tail light has a thick foam gasket between the lens and plastic base that seals these holes. The circuit board also has a gasket behind it to seal the two small holes there. Perhaps your gaskets are missing?
